Edwin's heart sank as he saw the sun disappear to the west, leaving him and his party of pokemon in increasing darkness. He had misjudged the travel time involved from going from Vega City to Nair City, especially in that he thought he could get there faster through a "shortcut" via a path through the Gurios mountains, but either his guide book was incorrect, or he had taken a wrong turn.
Now here he was with his four pokemon, stranded miles away from their destination. Travelling through the mountains at night was out of the question, they would simply have to rest until the morning. Two of his pokemon, Arkady the Noibat and Luke the Gligar did not like this prospect. Edwin offered for them to rest in their pokeballs, but neither took this up Arkady felt better outside of his, rested in Edwin's heavy coat.
Fortunately the researcher-trainer had come prepared. He had a firestarting kit, as well as food for him and his pokemon; as well as a sleeping bag and other provisions. Yes it was heavy, but warm enough to prevent him freezing overnight on the frosty mountain.
Still though, they needed to find shelter from the winds, as that could sap the warmth from then very quickly. While Edwin couldn't find a cave, he at least found a campground on the path - likely prepared by rangers in the area. And to his delight, there was even a pile of logs in the back of it. The small campground was protected from the wind in 3 directions, consisting of what was essentially a cul-de-sac. This would be the place where he would rest tonight.
And so, Edwin had a fire started by the time the twilight turned to darkness. Here he began to cook their food, Arkady sitting in his lap, enjoying the fire. Luke was at Edwin's side too.
Bellamy the Sneasel and Sten the Rockruff, meanwhile, were having one of their usual tiffs, both of them were furious with each other. Bellamy was angry with Sten for keeping them so long in Vega City, and Sten was angry with Bellamy for leading them across the mountains. Edwin wished they wouldn't fight.
Since Bellamy didn't like fire, he was sitting a distance away, watching the path while Sten eagerly watched the fire as his dinner was cooked. Eventually, it was ready, and most unfortunately, Edwin accidentally got Bellamy and Sten's meals wrong, but not before Sten had taken a bite out of it.
("Sten you bastard! That's my food!") the Sneasel snarled.
("It's not my fault, Edwin gave me the wrong bowl!") Sten barked in response.
("You KNEW it was my meal, but you took a bite anyway because you're nothing but a lousy hoodlum jerk!") Bellamy yelled.
("Oh get over it you smug prissy asshole!")
"Guys, stop, settle down!" Edwin cried, but it was no good, the two started to come to blows. Before he could withdraw them to their pokeballs, however, something extraordinary happened that stopped it anyway.
The Razor Claw that Edwin had brought for Bellamy started to glow from the emotions that he was feeling in the fight. And then Bellamy began to glow too. Sten stared in surprise from it. Then Edwin realized what was happening - Bellamy was evolving!
He grew a few inches, completely transforming. His ear feather became two, and his claws changed from two to three. Then the light of the evolution faded, and Bellamy stood as a Weavile.
("Heh. Well, I'm over it, Sten, enjoy that extra bite") he said to the stunned Rockruff, and sat down next to Edwin, eating his dinner, feeling that evolving made up for this transgression.
"Well, um, are you alright, Sten?" Edwin asked, hoping he hadn't been injured, but thankfully they had ceased fighting before they started doing real damage to each other. Sten felt rather uncomfortable, but, resumed eating as well, thinking about things, slightly jealous. Arkady and Luke meanwhile thought that they really needed to get these two to stop going at each other's throats at the slightest provocation.
Both the fire and the light from Bellamy's evolution would have been obvious for anyone else nearby.
