I HOPE THAT YOU BURN Emilia wandered through the winding maze that was the centerpoint of her gym challenge. She had come to know the maze so well that she didn't even use the customary torch. She walked through inky blackness, her feet sure and confident. When she finally reached the entrance, she blinked furiously as her eyes saw light for the first time in several minutes. Shielding her eyes with her hand, she exited the gym, locking it tightly behind her. She patted her hip with her free hand, finding her Pokeball holster secure against her leg, Slither's Pokeball nestled in the first slot. After what had almost been a real challenge, she was letting the lizard get some well-deserved rest. The gym leader walked through the city, her boots sinking into the blanket of snow with every step. She needed to get to the Pokemon Center to have Slithers assessed. It was terribly bothersome, the amount of maintenance that was required to be a gym leader. Her team had to be in tip-top shape at all times, so Emilia spent many long hours in the Pokemon Center while the nurses coddled her healing Pokemon. Often enough, she would run into a few of her defeated challengers there, many recovering from sustained burns. She would simply smirk as they glared at her and walked away in silence with their loser Pokemon. Emilia handed her Pokeball to the nurse and sat in the waiting room, rifling through a magazine as she waited.

You are standing too close to a flame that burns hotter than the sun in the middle of July, ma'am. There were few places as boring as the cities, he had come to learn. Far too many regulations as to where one could and couldn't have pokemon battles, far too crowded for one to go wild on a bicycle ride, far too much smoke and smog from all the damn vehicles. It was a darn mess. Not to mention it was cold as balls in the particular city he was visiting. He had been piggybacking his Larvesta all day just to keep himself warm. At least it was good training. He had checked out the many hotels that dotted the city, but in typical city fashion, everything was stupidly expensive and what wasn't was terribly rundown. That left one place, other than the streets that is. The good thing about pokemon centers is that staying in them was not only cheap, it was lovely. The bedrooms were always kept clean and in near perfect condition; it was a health institution first and foremost after all. The problem, however, that they were almost always packed full of other broke trainers. He sighed in relief as he got a key from the Nurse on the counter, glad to find a place to stay for the night. That was one less thing to worry about. The Pokemon center had about as many people as one would expect, though the woman besides him had actually skipped the line and still gotten service somehow. Oh well; not his problem. He swung his Larvesta in front of him, hugging her at the waist. "Ready to work? We gotta find somewhere to set shop." He smirked. "'Round the city's gym should work." There were challengers and spectators going in and out of the gym all the time. "What's a better way to kick start your appetite than getting your ass kicked, after all."

I HOPE THAT YOU BURN It felt strange, not having Slithers at her side. Normally, the Salandit would have been curled up at her feet, staring down anything that moved, waiting for the order to attack. But, alas, the lizard was off for her usual check-up and would return bright-eyed and bushy-scaled, ready to take on their next challenger. The dark-eyed trainer watched as people came in and out of the Pokemon Center, waiting patiently or not-so-patiently to have their Pokemon healed. One boy, in particular, caught her eye. He clung to the Larvesta in his arms like a lifeline, and she could vaguely hear bits of his conversation with the Pokemon. Her eyes narrowed when she heard the words "'round the gym." What could he possibly be doing around the gym, her gym? Emilia lowered the magazine slightly, her eyes peering just over the top of the pages as she watched the boy. His words continued to flicker in and out, but she had heard enough. He was planning something around her gym. The woman finally put the magazine back on the table at her side and rose to her feet. She wished she had Slithers with her at that very moment. The black lizard had a way of intimidating people that even Emilia lacked. Nonetheless, she brushed off the front of her jacket and made her way over to the boy, her eyes suspicious and untrusting. "Excuse me," she said to the boy, "I couldn't help but overhear you mentioning something about the gym. Are you taking on the gym challenge, perhaps?" It was a good start, she supposed. She would get an answer out of him one way or another.

You are standing too close to a flame that burns hotter than the sun in the middle of July, ma'am. "Who's asking?" He responded to the woman bluntly. He wasn't in the habit of just answering to strangers. Okay, not adult strangers anyways. Oh well, she didn't look shady, even if she sucked at being friendly; seriously, talk about a cold start. She was the one approaching him. Where did she get off giving him the stink eye? "Well, whatever." He said, seemingly brushing off their lack of acquaintanceship. "I don't really have the time to grace the gym leader with my presence, I'm afraid. Not yet anyways." Was the response the child gave the woman as he pet his Larvesta's fur idly, the pokemon hidding its features by burying its face into his jacket. "Just Considering setting up shop across from the gym to make a quick buck out of all the traffic it generates." He admitted, before yawning. It ws just a big maybe, however. He hadn't realized it before, but he was whipped out from all the travelling. He had rode his bike all the way from the previous town to the city without pause in order to make good time. Maybe he would just make a quick bite and hit the hay. "So. Any reason you asked?" He took his turn to question the woman, looking her in the eye.

I HOPE THAT YOU BURN Emilia could already tell she didn't like this kid. She hoped he would challenge her gym. Maybe then she could knock some respect into his arrogant little ass. Her team would certainly be happy to teach him a lesson. "I'm sure Stellara's Sweetheart will be most disappointed that you don't have time to, uh, 'grace her with your presence,'" she said with a chuckle, using dramatic air quotes. This kid was so full of hot air it was a wonder he didn't simply float away. She looked down at the Larvesta in his arms. She felt sorry for the bug for having such a brat as a trainer. But she just smiled condescendingly, not allowing herself to voice such an opinion. When the kid stated his intentions, Emilia looked away to hide a smirk and an eye roll. So, the kid thought he could just capitalize on Emilia's hard work? Typical. She looked back at him and smiled knowingly. "I don't think the gym leader would appreciate that. She's rather protective of her space," Emilia said sweetly. Truth be told, she didn't care what the kid was selling; she didn't want him anywhere near her gym unless it was to be crushed by her fire-type team. Emilia shrugged. "Curiosity, mostly," she said. She opened her mouth to say more, but stopped when she saw a nurse approaching. A rare, genuine smile twitched at her lips as the nurse handed her Slither's Pokeball. She nodded politely to the nurse before turning her attention back to the boy, pocketing the ball simultaneously. "I would just be careful, if I was you, especially around here," she said casually, adding another shrug.

--- The boy made a sound from the back of his throat the moment the word sweetheart exited the woman's lips, clearly finding amusement in the irony. "She and I both." He replied. He had either missed the mockery or believed in his greatness so thoroughly his ego just owned it. "Duly Noted." Was the kid's reply, the boy fiddling with his PokeNav as he said. There was a map in of the city on the screen.
The boy was not there when she turned around after receiving her pokemon back. It wasn't exactly something rare for him to find condescending adults like the woman, what with him being such a... confident, yes, let's call it that, youth with such an open appreciation for his own talents. Now didn't that sound better than cocky little shit or arrogant brat? Regardless, he knew exactly what he had to do when dealing with a condescending adult. Arguing was rarely the best course of action. They would just dismiss anything he said by pointing out the age difference, as if that suddenly elevated their opinions and arguments above his own. No, the best way was to openly ignore and walk out on them. For whatever reason, some adults took offense to that, specially from children. The boy hummed as the door closed behind him, glancing at his pokeNav once again for confirmation. He turned his gaze in the direction of the street leading up to the gym. Time to go set up shop. "Hold on tight girl, it's chilly." He said to Larvesta, who still hung to his back, breathing in deeply as her heat spread through his body, keeping him warm in the terrible weather. "Wonder what the problem with that lady was." He asked his pokemon as he began advancing towards the gym. Emilia Chevaliertl;dr: Doug ignored the oddly lady's warnings and proceeded as planned. What do?

I HOPE THAT YOU BURN Emilia watched the door of the Pokemon Center close as she turned back to face the boy. She laughed loudly, which attracted the confused looks of a few other patrons. Emilia quickly pocketed the Pokeball in her hand, shaking her head at the door. "What an idiot," she murmured. Never in her life had Emilia seen someone so cocky. That arrogance would not get him far in life and it certainly wouldn't get him Emelia's badge. Maybe she should tell the other gym leaders about him, to at least prepare them for a good laugh. No, let them learn in their own time. The gym leader finally left the Pokemon Center, tugging her jacket tighter around her to brace against the harsh winter winds of Nair City. She trudged through the snow, envying Slithers who was tucked away in her Pokeball. When Emilia finally reached the gym, she looked up at the building, hating its existence and her role within. Sighing, she pushed open the doors and went inside, resigning herself to her lot in life. @tag ✖ end thread
