Welp, this was it. About time for Edwin Armadale to embark on his pokemon training journey. It was a little overwhelming for him, given that he had grown up with books and knowledge. But, well, that experience had been too frightening, when he was attacked and his pet pokemon Arkady wasn't strong enough to protect him.
The memory of that event was a source of trauma and shame for himself, that he had let Arkady get hurt like that. He had been rushed to the nearest pokemon center in critical condition as Edwin had fled from the wild Aggron, and was thankfully nursed back to full health. Apparently that Aggron had been a source of worries for the local area, but, that was a story for another time.
Regardless, the experience was enough to make Edwin decide to put his academic ambitions to one side now and obtain some practical experience. Of course, Arkady was pleased to be at his side. The Noibat wanted to be a big, strong Noivern one day after all, maybe even strong enough to have Edwin ride on his back as they flew through the skies together?
But, where to start? Edwin was unsure at first, until he decided the best place to begin was the city at the center of it all, Cyngi City. And what would he do here? What every self respecting researcher would do - stock up on field manuals.
"Now let's see..." Edwin hummed to himself as he walked through a local information store, examining brochures and guides to various aspects of travelling in the wilds. He was dressed in a smart looking jacket as well as cargo pants and sturdy shoes. Arkady was perched on his shoulder, examining the pictures. Eventually, they emerged from the shop, Edwin carrying a pile of guides that was slightly smaller than Arkady, and sat down on a nearby bench to attempt to stuff them in his backpack.
"I, uh, may have overdone this" he said, as the bag's zipper failed to close.
("Ya think?") Arkady chirped back in pokespeak, sweatdropping. To passers by, it would be obvious that Edwin was probably off to a bad start in his pokemon training adventure and could probably get some assistance.

YOU CAN FIND MY PICTURE ON THE DICTIONARY IF YOU LOOK FOR THE WORD BADASS. Ask and you shall receive, said Arceus while feeling like an ass probably. Maybe Edwin just had bad luck. "Outta of my way, fodder!" Shouted a voice at the top of its young lungs as its owner blazed a trail past a pair of secondary character looking folks, sending both stumbling to the side. A child on a Bicycle was trying to weave his way through the heavily infested streets of the Cyngi City, trying being the keyword. Though perhaps 'weave' was not a correct word either. Barrel through was far more accurate. "Aw. Crapbaskets." Was all the boy could say when his bicycle's front wheel suddenly bumped into a slab of stone slightly off place on the streets. One loss of control later, the kid was flying through the air before landing squarely in a fountain in the middle of the street. For a moment, silence reigned. Only a tiny moment though, the boy came out of the water gasping almost immediately, coughing out the liquid roughly until a penny was spat out onto the asphalt. "Ugh... Wait, a cent? This is all you gave for a wish? You miserable-" The boy was essentially talking to himself as he stood up, soaked completely. At least his bag had been tied to the back of his Bicycle.

Arkady's ears twitched as he heard something. The Noibat turned and looked to see a young human riding a bicycle. Something told him he was probably going too fast.
"Uh oh, that guy's going too fast" said Edwin, which was the thing that told Arkady. Funny how these things work out. Edwin gasped and Arkady squeaked as the boy went flying out of control and landed in a fountain.
("Is that guy gonna be okay?") Arkady asked, as the boy emerged, spitting out a coin. ("Oh! He used Pay Day! I didn't know humans could do that!") he exclaimed further.
Edwin meanwhile thought he'd best go and help, standing up and slinging his now rather heavy bag over his shoulder, careful not to drop any of the books within. Seeing that the kid seemed to not have serious injuries, Edwin walked over to his fallen bicycle, bringing it over to the edge of the fountain.
"Uh, everything alright there?" Edwin asked. "Here's your bike and bag" he added. Arkady was perched on his shoulder still, tilting his head inquisitively.
("If that was deliberate, that was kinda cool") he'd remark. ("I'd raise a scorecard like you humans do on contests on the TV but I can't really write numbers").
All of this would come out as little squeaks and chirps that most humans probably couldn't understand. If the boy accepted, Edwin would extend his hand to help him out of the fountain.

'Sup, Four-eyes. If the boy felt any shame or embarrassment for the spectacle he had made of himself there, he didn't show it at all. He was still muttering under his breath about the cheapness of whoever threw a friggin cent into the fountain, throwing the tiny coin over his shoulder with an eye roll. His object of irritation now out of sight, he shifted his gaze towards the man approaching him with his bike and bag instead. He didn't respond immediately, ignoring the offered hand in favor of front hand-springing himself out of the fountain. A bit too proud to accept help from an stranger, nice as they may be. "Yup, totally fine." He said as he patted himself, his clothes absolutely drenched. "Just need to run my threads through a dryer and I'll be set." He said as he hefted the bike up like it was plastic, folding it before shoving it into his bag. "Thanks for getting my stuff, though. Would be a pain if someone had stolen this bike. They are crazy expensive, I only got this one through a ticket." He chatted away as he grasped a pokeball and chucked it over his shoulder. Before it even touched the floor, the boy was already starting to undress himself, dropping his jacket to the floor unceremoniously before beginning to take off his shirt. The pokeball touched ground and a Larvesta popped out of it, the ball seemingly bouncing back into Doug's hand. The tiny fire bug blinked at its surroundings as if surprised, before immediately bee-lining it for its trainer. It jumped back the moment it touched his wet pants however, shaking its fur wildly with its eyes scrunched closed, droplets of water flying around it. Doug only grinned as he took off his shirt. "Yeah, I don't like wet clothes either. Think you can help me with that?" He asked as he drapped his wet shirt on top of her. It visibly began to steam while on top of her, her flame body quickly drying the water inside it. The boy turned towards the bespectacled young man while his pokemon took care of his clothes. "Anyway!" He held out his hand. "I'm Doug. Pleased to meet'cha. Wanna battle?"

Glad that he didn't seem hurt, Edwin took note of the other trainer. He seemed to be an early teen, presumably a young trainer that just started his journey? Edwin certainly wasn't the type to ride a bike at full speed through a city when he was that age, but then again, perhaps the life of a teenage trainer wasn't something he'd understand? Especially why he'd ride such an expensive bicycle like that but he supposed accidents happen.
Edwin made an awkward look as the kid took his soaked clothes off, averting his gaze. Arkady then looked excited as a pokemon was coming out of its ball. A... fiery bug thing! Ah, the pokedex said it was a Larvesta. And it seemed to be doing a kind of drying technique, which he thought seemed handy.
The boy then introduced himself as Doug Freeman. "Hey, I'm Edwin Armadale" he replied. "And this is my partner Arkady" he smiled at his Noibat, who chirped with greetings.
Doug then asked for a battle rather abruptly. "Uh... really?" Edwin asked, hesitantly. He looked down at the Larvesta. He looked awkwardly at Arkady, who was tilting his head in a confused manner. "Well, uh, I'm more of a researcher, and Arkady's just started learning to battle..." he said, scratching the back of his own head awkwardly. He then realized what he wanted to do. "But... maybe you could help? Are you an experienced trainer?"
Arkady meanwhile flew down next to Larvesta, giving a friendly smile. ("Hiya! My name's Arkady, what's yours?") he asked. ("Your trainer's pretty cool! I saw him use Pay Day!")

'Sup, Four-eyes. The boy didn't seem to notice (or didn't care) for the awkwardness his lack of reluctance to take off his clothing was adding to the conversation, muttering Edwin's name underneath his breath for a second before nodding. He would probably not forget it. "Cool." He said, saluting the Noibat as Ed presented it to him before pointing his pokedex at it. Once it was scanned, he swiftly returned the machine to his pocket, marveling as he realized it was apparently waterproof. Nifty. "Yes really." Had he stuttered or something? He tended to nearly bite his tongue when he spoke quickly. "Researcher is just another word for trainer, far as I'm concerned; they usually do just fine in battles." Their pokemon tended to have rather unusual movesets, too. Doug had some interest in a few topics of research, but he just wasn't all that into reading, studying and all that nonsense. Nowhere nearly as much as a few of his friends were anyways. Larvesta couldn't really notice being looked at while underneath her trainer's shirt, for which she was thankful. "Experienced? Hmm." The boy reached for his chin, scratching at it. "Well, I'm most definitely an expert and pro." He assured the bespectacled young man with a confident nod, eyes closed. "No real experience though, only been in a couple of official battles." He finished casually. "So. Up for it?" He asked once again. For her part, Larvesta did not react particularly gracefully to Arkady's friendly approach, burrowing deeper in her trainer's clothes as if to try and hide from the bat, her body temperature rising sharply and causing more steam to waft from the pieces of clothing. Doug didn't need to turn around to know it would happen. "She's not all that social, by the by." He informed the other trainer, crouching down to grasp at his now dry and very hot shirt. His pokemon seemed distressed upon losing her cover, so he dropped his drenched, heavier jacket on top of her instead, the steam rising soon after.

Edwin noticed that Doug seemed to be a little, well, unaware of the situation so to say. And he also seemed slightly insistent on battling. Arkady meanwhile was perplexed at how shy the Larvesta was of him. He wasn't being threatening was he? Arkady looked a little downcast.
Edwin couldn't force the friendly little Noibat to battle under these circumstances. "Ah, sorry, the answer's no... I don't really battle with people I've only just met" he explained.
Edwin didn't like the idea of a battle spiralling out of control. He didn't want Arkady to be hurt again. Even though Arkady would have an advantage against a Bug and Fire type like Larvesta, still, Edwin needed more reason to battle a stranger than eye contact.
Yes, he supposed that was why Arkady was still kind of weak, but, Edwin had to trust someone before he battled them. And he'd much prefer to have friendly matches against those he counted as his friends.
As he thought about it more, he'd clearly show signs of distress. The memory of carrying his beaten, unconscious Noibat to the pokecenter, running from an aggressive Aggron, no, it was currently too much of a trauma for him.
"Uh... sorry... I just have... uh... problems" he said, getting quieter until he murmured the last word. Arkady looked up at him, then flew back up to his shoulder, rubbing his cheek against the side of Edwin's head. "But... maybe some other time?" he offered.

R-r-rejected! The boy looked up at the man a tilted brow, the distress in the man's features flying right over his head. He wasn't really practiced in dealing with people's emotions. As far as his understanding of body language told him, Ed was feeling too constipated to battle and was too embarrassed to admit it. He could understand that; he wouldn't want to battle if he was feeling like that either. "Ah, gotcha." No he didn't. "That's fine. The city's crowded as hell anyways. We'll find a battle eventually." He couldn't even ride his bike through the city without running into someone, after all. Maybe the next person he runs over will challenge him. The boy put on his shirt, before reaching for the the jacket his pokemon had heated up. "Okay you, enough hiding. Any longer and you'll burn off my favorite jacket." He said, putting on the article of clothing before crouching in front of the Larvesta, wrapping his arms around her 'waist' before hoisting her up. "Maybe you should try socializing in the meanwhile." His pokemon responded by burying its face on his shirt. Welp, that was that. She was nearly 4 feet tall. Rather huge and not exactly something he could just casually carry on his head. The boy seemed determined to prove this wrong, swinging her around so that she was piggybacking a ride on him, holding his bag around a single arm before facing Edwin once again. "Say. Have you been here for long? I've only been to a few City's before." Nair City, mostly. That, and considering his birthplace's stance on technology and their affinity for tradition, for all intents and purposes, he was a country bumpkin. "I was thinking of trying the food, sees how it compares to my pops. But I've no idea of where anything is and the city map is just confusing nonsense." He grumbled. He really couldn't read the city's map at all; it was overly complex and confusing.

Glad that that was settled, Edwin was at a kind of awkward stage, being in the position of a 19 year old asking help from what appeared to be a 13 year old. Arkady was happily oblivious to any such awkwardness and was simply wanting to go with the flow.
Then, trouble brewed.
A cocky little Rockruff was nearby, doing the rounds to show off to newly initiated members of his little gang. Heh, these humans were so stupid in falling to this routine, time and time again.
The plan was simple. Distract the human by being cute, then another pokemon would zip in and snatch their belongings. And then zip before they found out what was going on. Rockruff was naturally talented at this procedure, now he just had to teach it to these pups - a pair of Poochyena that wanted in on their operation.
And so Rockruff attempted the routine on some nearby diners, looking up at them with his big blue eyes, pining for a bit of food. Yeah, it was pathetic, but, it worked. The fat female human squealed with delight like the Spoink spawn that she was and tossed him some pathetic scraps of poultry. Well, that was fine. Now for the Poochyena to nab her handbag...
Critical Failure! The stupid pups knocked over the chair the bag was sitting on, and the bag anchored itself in the frame. Rockruff scowled at the stupid pokemon. ("Stop tryin' to steal it and RUN!") he snarled. Before they could be pursued, they fled through the crowds, evading human feet before they reached a safe spot near a fountain.
("You idiots! You screwed everything up, ruff!") he snapped, rearing on his hind legs and cuffing the Poochyena behind the ears. They looked ashamed, as they should be.
("What about these humans here, boss?") one Poochyena suggested, nodding over to where a damp human and a human with glass eyes were talking. Two other pokemon were nearby - a Noibat and a Larvesta. Rockruff snorted, he could take those two on. But one appeared to have a pretty loaded bag at his feet.
("Okay, change of plan. You distract by bein' cute, I'll nab the bag") Rockruff told them. Maybe they wouldn't screw this one up?
And so, while Edwin was listening to Doug's question, the Poochyena approached. "Actually I just got here too. I'm originally from Saiph City" he said. Then, he noticed the Poochyena, who appeared to have pleading, begging expressions on their little faces. "Aw, what's wrong little guys? Something the matter?" Edwin asked the small pokemon. Rockruff then made a little nasty scooby-doo giggle as his plan was falling into place. Yep, the human was crouching down, just needs to take off his bag and then he'd strike!

Ew, mutts. Saiph City? "Oh, I haven't been there yet." Not too surprising; there was a massive desert between it and the next piece of civilization for miles to cross. "There's a gym there, right?" He said as he pulled out his PokeNav, humming as he quickly zoomed into the Southern Section of Stellara's map. There was some basic information and trivia of the cities if one was curious enough. Naturally, Doug was not, and didn't bother checking about until he felt it was necessary. There was a indeed gym to be found in the city. Ghost type, it appeared. So, not something Doug would be trying to tackle any time soon. Pocketing his PokeNav, the boy decided to share a bit of info on himself with the bespectacled young man. Seemed fair, since Edwin had gone out of his way and all that. "I'm from Shaula Town. Home to the world's greatest Martial Artist and the best diner in all of Stellara." He boasted, both arms on his hips and chest puffed proudly, rather assured in his claims apparently. A short pause followed soon after. "Oh, and Stellara's Dragon-type Gym." He amended almost like an afterthought. He would have continued; after all, he hadn't promoted the greatest Dojo in Stellara just yet. A pair of mutts popped up just in time to interrupt him however. They were making puppy dog eyes at Ed, and Doug couldn't for his life figure why. There were people with actual food on hand around them. Why were they even paying attention to them? The only thing they had was water everywhere (in his case; even if his shirt and jacket were dry, he couldn't, unfortunately, take off his pants for Larvesta to give 'em the same treatment). Unlike his bespectacled acquaintance, the boy was not receptive to the Poochyena's efforts, turning his gaze away from them to focus on his own pokemon once again, seeing that Edwin was distracted himself. "Well, whadaya think babe?" He asked casually, prompting his pokemon to blink at him. "Was just thinking 'bout setting shop here, is all." He informed her, before turning his gaze back to Edwin. "They're probably just hungry. God knows why they came to us out of everyone else, but whatever; giving them something to munch on should get them to leave." He commented as he reached into his bag, "I should have something." Hopefully he had leftovers; usually he just bought the ingredients at the city before opening shop.

Edwin nodded in confirmation. "Yeah, there's a gym there. A Ghost type. It... uh... lives up to its reputation from how creepy it is".
While Edwin had never entered the gym itself in his youth, he had seen many trainers enter it with a swagger, and then leave it with the expression of trauma. There was simply something off about it. But, one day, as a trainer, he would surely have to face it. Hopefully Arkady would be part of a strong enough team to face it someday.
So, Doug was from Shaula town. "Ah, that's neat. I've always wanted to go there" Edwin mused. In fact, why not go there next? He knew Arkady appreciated good food, plus, the Noibat had a type advantage against fellow Dragon types. But, at the same time, dragon types had an advantage against him too, and of course any dragon gym leader would ensure they would come out best in such a matchup. Edwin thought he would best approach that particular gym later on in his trainer challenge.
In regards to the Poochyena, Edwin thought it would be at least nice to give it some food. He unslung his bag to see what was in it, which was perfect for the Rockruff! Yes! Now was his chance!
As Edwin pulled out a small clear plastic bag full of seasoned meat for the offering, the Rockruff made his opening maneuver. He bit down hard on the bag strap as he launched himself onto the scene before the human or the Noibat could figure what was going on, then would proceed to pull the bag to his safe hole. If only it had worked that way, but it didn't.
("What... the HECK... is IN HERE?!") the Rockruff growled to himself. The human's bag was heavier than he had imagined. Just what was in here? He couldn't even move with this kind of weight! What the heck could he do?!
"Hey! Rockruff! You can't steal my bag like that!" Edwin snapped. At once, Arkady flew to attention in front of him, glaring at the Rockruff for his act of subterfuge.
("Uh oh, I'm outta here!") the Poochyena thought, running away, as its ability allowed it to. The Rockruff meanwhile glared back at Arkady, standing his ground with a growl. He wasn't gonna let an uppity Noibat rain on his parade. He was the top dog here, dammit!
All it would take was a simple Rock Throw and that would be that. But... oh no, Rockruff didn't know how to use Rock Throw yet! So instead he tried a Sand Attack by flinging sand from his tail into the Noibat's eyes. Arkady gasped and tried to shake it out.
"It's alright, Arkady! Sound him out with your Supersonic!" Edwin advised. Yes, of course! A Noibat like Arkady could easily find out where the Rockruff was. His speaker-like ears emitted a high pitched sound directed at the Rockruff, who winced as his sensitive hearing was sent haywire from the noise.
("Grr! You're gonna get it now, punk!") Rockruff snarled, glaring at the Noibat, who had now seemed to clone himself somehow. He launched himself into a Tackle attack at the right one, but he wasn't there! What the?!
The Rockruff landed flat on his face and hurt himself in his confusion. Edwin was starting to feel confident now. Arkady had this under control!
"Arkady, use Absorb!" he advised. And so the Noibat's wings glowed green, drawing green sparks of light from the Rockruff's body. This only angered him, but was very effective due to it being used on a Rock type.
Rockruff responded by using Tackle again, only this time he aimed in the middle of the two Noibats, and consequently struck Arkady hard, making him squeak in pain, but he regained control, flapping out of range. Supposing now was the time to strike, Edwin pulled a pokeball from his bag and tossed it at the Rockruff before it could do anything else. The pokeball shook four times before falling silent.
It took a moment for Edwin to realize what had just happened. It was all incredibly awkward, happening in front of Doug so to say.
"Ah... er, sorry about that" Edwin said to the boy, picking up the pokeball, now containing a rather livid but resigned Rockruff. "That happened kinda fast, and, er, well... I think I may have to head to the pokecenter". A small sense of thrill was beginning to take hold and he was grinning a little with disbelief at what happened. Arkady landed happily on his shoulder, a bit bruised, but no worse for wear.

Highway Robbery? Well... That happened. Honestly, everything had transcurred so quickly there was little Douglas could have done. He had briefly considered punting the Poocheyenas into the stratosphere once their true game was revealed... But he didn't want to dirty his shoes. He had just washed them on the fountain after all. "Are you carrying boulders in that bag?" Asked the boy with a snicker. "Nice battling, by the way. You handled yourself pretty well back there. Why did you catch that pokemon though?" He asked the bespectacled young man, tilting a brow. "I'm not an expert in... uh," He reached into one of his bag's pockets, producing a pokedex and flipping through the list. "-Rockruff. but that one in particular did just try to rob you. Had a plan and everything, apparently." He pointed out, storing the pokedex back into his bag. "Got caught up in the moment?" Eventually he simply shrugged his shoulders. "Well, it's one way to fill your team, so I guess it doesn't matter." He commented airily, taking the events in stride. He wouldn't have even considered capturing the pokemon himself, but then again, even he could admit he was a bit of a Bug Maniac. "The pokemon Center sounds great, actually. Gotta check if they've any lodging still available." Hopefully they would; he really didn't feel like paying for a suite in a local hotel. The Pokemon Center was so much cheaper.

"Ah... not really" Edwin said to Doug as he asked what was in the bag. "Just a bunch of guide books... I think I might want to return half of them though, I don't think it'd be healthy to walk very far like this" he admitted. Although he was used to lugging around heavy textbooks from his time in high school, well, there was a difference between walking from class to class and walking at least 20 miles in a day.
He smiled when Doug complimented him, but, was temporarily unable to answer as to why he caught the Rockruff. He looked at the pokeball that contained the rebel puppy.
"I'm not entirely sure of that myself" he admitted. "Just... this Rockruff seemed to want to stick around for a challenge, and, well, I suppose now that it's my responsibility, I can try and train him to be better?"
There was another matter too. "And honestly? That plan of his to use the Poochyena to distract me while he stole my bag was kind of clever". Still though. Raising this Rockruff would be a challenge for sure. But he'd take it seriously. He was meant to be a proper trainer now. But, of course, if this Rockruff was too much for him to handle, he'd either release him or trade him to a better trainer.
Okay then, to the pokemon center it was. "Yeah, I rely on pokecenters for lodging as well, at least outside my home town" Edwin said. He put Rockruff's pokeball on his trainer belt. While he did want to see how he was, well, maybe he might be in a better mood after being healed up?
Edwin then headed toward the Pokecenter, presumably alongside Doug. There the first thing he did was call back Arkady and then gave both his pokemon to the nurse for healing. Then, afterward, he would sit down while sorting through the guide books in his bag, determining which ones he needed and which ones he didn't.
"Any guides that you recommend, Doug?" Edwin asked, just in case the other trainer wanted to help out a little in making up his mind.

Cooking and Stuff? "I dunno, seems like it worked as a pretty effective trap." Commented the boy airily as he lifted both hands to the back of his head, his fingers interlacing together behind his neck. "Might be good for your back to dump a few though, yeah. Edwin gave Doug his reasons, and if the boy thought anything bad about them, he refrained from commenting on them, shrugging his shoulders at the taller man. "Good reason as any, I guess! The doggo would have just gone back to stealing if it escaped anyways. You can make him an upstanding gent this way!" He said, grinning. His gaze later rolled down to the pokemon's pokeball however, a brow tilted. "Bit too clever if you ask me, but you look smart, you can probably handle it." He had glasses and liked to carry a lot of books. That meant he was smart, right? Maybe those were silly, even stereotypical reasons to think so, but Edwin did look like he had a good head on his shoulders so far. Once Edwin's pokemon were within the nurse's care, he began sorting through his multiple, multiple books, much to Doug's confusion. "Wow, I don't think you need even half of this." He commented, scratching at his chin. He was probably being unfair; his mother had gone out of her way to over prepare him for his journey, and he had always been an outdoors kind kid. "Uh, never mind." He said, looking over the books, before picking one that seemed to be about... cooking on the road. "Huh. You know anything about cooking?" He asked the man, tilting his head slightly at him before opening the book and beginning to go through it. Simple Recipes, which he supposed made sense. "Well! My dad always said that before worrying about anything else, you should worry about what you'll put in your gut and your pokemon's." He commented, holding out the cooking book towards the young man. "This recipes are easy, though if it's your first time it may be a bit too hard to learn on the road. Practicing in a kichen should help, tho!" "Do you have any book on first aids in there, too? You'll have to take care of your mons outside of cities and junk at times. Good to know how to handle small stuff at least."

"Yeah, I guess they did" Edwin admitted. "Although... what would a Rockruff do with that's in my bag anyway?" he wondered further. His really important things such as his pokedex, pokegear and wallet were in his trouser pockets after all. His bag contained surplus compared to that.
Doug remarked that the Rockruff seemed a little too smart, which made Edwin a little nervous again. Still though, he tried to think that it would be alright. "Yeah, thanks" he said. Even if this Rockruff seemed to be a pokemon hoodlum, maybe Edwin could figure him out and handle him better? Rockruffs were pokemon that tended to get well with humans after all. Edwin would have to simply get to know him if the case was otherwise. And, if worse came to worse, Arkady had proven that he could handle him in battle.
When in the pokecenter, Edwin noted that Doug asked how his cooking skills were, then looked at and pointed out a useful guide book on pokemon nutrition in the field.
"Ah... yes, I'm okay with cooking, but not in the outdoors" Edwin said, realizing this fact would help him decide what guides he needed. At once he removed the guides on domestic cooking and kept the ones that would help him know how to prepare food for himself and his pokemon in the outdoors. Those were far more essential than the ones that taught him gourmet city cooking for instance.
Doug then mentioned pokemon first aid. Edwin made a positive noise as he realized this was also far more important than the series of books he had brought about the nuances of pokemon communication. What was he thinking? He had known Arkady for six years and by now had learned enough about his pokespeak to figure out what he needed if he spoke up and he seemed pretty happy. Learning how other pokemon worked would be something he could learn by himself.
"Ah, right, yeah, I'll keep the ones about first aid" Edwin answered Doug. By now he had sorted out around half of the guides that he needed. He would keep the field cooking and first aid books and discard the books about pokemon communication theory, breeding, domestic raising and other periphery. However, he would also keep the guide on how to deal with new pokemon, mainly because he thought this Rockruff would be a handful.
Edwin would then approach the pokemart worker and return the guides he didn't need, which was over two thirds now that he thought about it properly. His bag was a lot lighter afterward. And, soon after, the nurse of the pokecenter notified him that Arkady and Rockruff were healed now.
"Ah, nice" Edwin responded, and accepted their pokeballs. Supposing he'd best see how they were, he opened the pokeballs. Arkady immediately landed on his shoulder, while the Rockruff seemed to rapidly be on alert, scanning his surroundings.
"Hey, Rockruff, are you alright?" Edwin asked gently. The Rockruff turned to look at him, then seemed to scoff.
("Hmph, of course I'm alright, human") he muttered in pokespeak, of course Edwin couldn't interpret this. But he noted that the Rockruff seemed to have a degree of personal pride. Maybe a name would help smooth things over?
"Rockruff, do you want a name?" Edwin asked, gently. The Rockruff glanced sidelong at him, but shifted his ears to acknowledge that he was listening. Edwin wouldn't dare name him something whimsical or silly. Maybe a simple strong name. "How about... Sten?"
("...I can work with that") Rockruff acknowledged, his tail wagging a little to tell Edwin that he was okay with it. It seemed that this wily Rockruff began to accept him as his trainer. Edwin smiled, then looked up at Doug.
"Ah, now that I think of it, how many pokemon do you have, Doug?" Edwin asked, interested. "For now I just have Arkady and Sten".
