Focused. The Baltis City Gym had not been among his list of possible first hits when he had set out on his journey. Neither a weakness nor an advantage, the boy had deemed the Water type gym one to tackle later as a low priority target. That aside, once he found himself close to it while travelling, he decided it didn't hurt to scout the gym, gather some information from past challengers, and see what he should expect in the future. A small investigation had led to a simple but important discovery: the gym leader's team was tough as balls at later stages, and quite respectable even at earlier levels. Seeing as how he didn't have a lot of pokemon capable of dealing with water types with certainty, the boy had decided to nip the gym in the bud before it truly became a massive hurdle. Popping his neck to the sides and cracking his knuckles, the boy bit the inside of his cheek as he gazed around him, a tad disoriented by the gym's particular... theme. A waterpark seemed unorthodox to him, but the challenge he had heard of sounded admittedly fun as heck. He had always been a fan of thrill rides, and a challenge fashioned as one massive water slide? Pretty darn rad. After quite a lengthy line (typical of parks), the boy finally managed to get to reception. After making it clear that he was not there to enjoy the park's attractions or its pool, but to challenge the gym leader, the boy presented his one earned Gym Badge, and placed all six pokemon he had on his person on the desk. "So, how does it begin?" He asked, tilting his head.

Just as Doug flashed his badge to the receptionist, a woman dressed in a yellow bikini hurried up to the desk. "I can take care of your challenge!" she offered. "I'm Kelsie, and I'm a registered gym trainer here. I can handle challenges in the absence of the gym leader." Right now, the Baltis City Gym was undergoing some changes, both with the leadership and the gym itself. Kelsie wasn't sure how long it would take before everything was settled, but she was confident in her ability to handle whatever challengers came the gym's way in the meantime. "We'll go ahead and get you started. Follow me." With that, Kelsie began to make her way towards the center of the gym, past the water park and other attractions. "And while we are on the way there, how was your first gym battle?" she asked. "And what made you even want to challenge the Stellara League in the first place? I'm sure you've heard the reputation it has." |

Focused. The boy shifted his gaze as a voice called out, eyes moving from the receptionist to a pretty woman in a yellow swimsuit. "The gym leader ain't around?" He asked, blinking as his brows furrowed. He scratched at the back of his head, before nodding at the woman, smiling. "Uh, sorry. Pleased to meet ya Kelsie. I'm Doug. So you are like this gym's Mr. Lucas?" He asked her as he fell in line besides her, drawing parallels between her and the Psychic Gym's 'Gate guardian'. "It was fun! 'Mr. Lucas' was the gate guardian, by the way. Mr. Arthur was nice too, though a bit quite and far too formal. Did get him to say 'oh fuck' once though." He said, a smirk tugging at his lip at the memory. He still wasn't too sure what happened there with the little Gothita, but he would lie if he said he didn't find the entire thing hilarious. He didn't remember getting questioned back in Elidani, but whatever, it wasn't like he needed to hide anything from this lady. "Yeah, I was raised in Stellara, course I know the league's rep." He would be having a hand in shaping it in the oncoming years, too. "And that's only another reason for why I wanna take on it!" If he was gonna challenge a league, why would he go for some wimp league, like Kanto or Hoenn when the toughest league out there was right around the corner? The actual 'why' was a little less clear, even to the boy. Why had he decided he wanted to become the League Champion...? "I don't know." He responded honestly. "Nobody pressured me to do this, and I don't have any larger than life personal goals. I want to battle strong opponents, beat the toughest challenges out there. It's all very vague to me. I think I'm still figuring it out. Is... is that a problem?" Hoo boy, if he got barred from challenging any more gyms due to his (lack of) reasons, that was gonna suck.

Kelsie chuckled at the confident teen's answers. "Well, you should probably think about why you even want the Champion spot anyways. Plus, you know that you aren't the only one going after the Champion title, so you need to make sure that this is really something you want to do before you go for it! After all, what good is it if your heart isn't really into it?" The two eventually made it to the main battling area. There were stands on both sides of the arena with the standard Pokemon League battlefield in the center. However, it was surrounded by water, and there were many floating platforms scattered about the pool; even pieces of the main battling field had open water in them. "I'm glad that you were able to complete your first gym challenge. As you probably already know, that means this one is going to be tougher, but I'm sure you are up to it." There were two walkways that connected the battlefield to the arena's perimeter and the stands. Kelsie made her way across one of them and walked to the opposite end of the battlefield to assume position. "You're going to need two Pokemon for this challenge. Focused. "Uh... Got it." Well, yet another thing to meditate on. The boy scratched at his cheek, wondering if there were any good reasons to become the champion beyond proving oneself. Did the position have any significant power to it? He (sort of) knew that some Champions on other regions were public figures, but he didn't know if they had any authority to try and make changes for the better in their countries. He would have to actually look into it a little. When they finally arrived to the site of the battle, the boy's eyes took in their battlefield, his lids narrowing slightly. An open pool with multiple platforms over it; even in the platforms, there was water to be found. So, not the place to give Larvesta a shot, clearly. He was inclined to try and simply use Leavanny, but they probably had means of dealing with the water type's weaknesses already... Not that that should discourage him from trying it out anyways. He nodded at the woman, reaching for his belt and grasping two poke balls, a grin tugging at his lips. "Go!" He said as he threw the pokeball over the pool, the device opening wide to unleash a white ray into the field. It took the shape of a tiny spider, its yellow fur sparking as it landed onto one of the platforms, blue eyes glancing around lazily before its gaze settled on the woman on the other side of the field. "Your gym debut, Joltik! Let's enjoy ourselves!" Cheered the pinkette, winking at the small bug. It responded with a suitably lackadaisical blink, it's four eyes wandering around its surroundings in an almost sluggish manner. "Your turn, Ms. Kelsie!"
