[nospaces] [attr="class","spellbound-text"]Darkness fell over the path. Which was entirely normal for the Kaxyl Forest. The thick canopy overhead blocked out much of the light, a leafy blanket to bring peace to the creepy and crawly denizens that made the forest their home. It also had the misfortune of bringing some level of unease to the travelers that took to the beaten dirt roads of the forest in their journeys.[break][break]
Sol Chance was one such traveler. The young boy trudged through the forest in silence, the only noise about him the occasionally rustling of the leaves, born either from wind or the numerous Pokemon that were surely hanging about them. Fae the Eevee padded along by his side, her own gaze fixed on the path ahead, unbreaking, looking for sense in the soft and slowly shifting shadows. The gaze of the trainer, however, went elsewhere.[break][break]
Signs of passage were all about them. People, Pokemon. . . it was a popular path they were on. Some of the tracks even looked fresh. It was, of course, to be expected. Every traveler in the general area took this path at some point or another. The vast, green sentinels of the forest made sure it was easier to cross their hallowed grounds than it was to go around them. The ancient woods emanated loneliness. Sol sought another soul, perhaps to break the static-like noise of the wind and leaves. Given the traffic, it did not seem unlikely.

I AM NOT THROWING AWAY MY SHOT Kaxyl Forest was a bizarre, foreboding place. Everywhere one looked, the foliage swayed and shivered, the contents hiding just out of sight. Any moment, a wild Pokemon - or something far worse - might jump out and attack. That was the vibe Lily got anyway. Not that she was scared or anything. No, that was a silly notion. She wasn't scared of the creepy crawlies that lurked in the shadows. She was fearless. Yeah, sure. The girl wandered through the forest, her Vulpix partner at her side. Unlike Lily, Snow really was fearless The fox sniffed at every leaf and twig that moved, darting off a few feet before returning to Lily's side. It was kinda funny how their roles had been reversed. Without warning, Snow darted into the underbrush and all Lily could see and hear were the crashing of leaves and the trembling of bushes. "Snow?" she asked hesitantly, fearing the worst. Had her partner been eaten by Butterfree or impaled by a Beedrill. She received her answer when the white Pokemon came darting out of the greenery, hot on the tail of a terrified Caterpie. "Snow!" Lily called out, chasing after them both. But the Pokemon were much faster, one fueled by fear and the other fueled by determination. As Lily chased after the pair, she blew past a boy that appeared just a few years younger than her. "Sorry!" she shouted as she ran past him. She lunged forward and grabbed Snow by one of her many tails, holding on for dear life. The Caterpie finally managed to escape, disappearing under a bush. Snow huffed and then returned to her trainer, staring at her in confusion as to why she was on the ground. "I should skin you," Lily said with a hint of annoyance. Picking up the fox, she walked back down the path to where she saw the boy. Approaching him, she bowed slightly and began apologizing. "I'm sorry about that. I don't know what's gotten into her."

[nospaces] [attr="class","spellbound-text"]Suddenly, the chase was on. Like a Neapolitan whirlwind, a girl rushed passed him, running down the path to catch something. A sharp turn of the neck, quick enough to give himself whiplash, and he watched her go, squinting through the shaded darkness of the Kaxyl Forest, struggling to make her out as she became a darker shape. [break][break]
Fae the Eevee suddenly curled around his leg. "Weird, huh?" muttered Sol Chance, "Somebody sure is in a hurry."[break][break]
But the girl doubled back, to apologize for rushing by. Sol Chance shrugged at her comment, giving the running girl something of a half-smirk in response to her bow. The Eevee beside him seemed to mimic him, managing as best a smirk as a little dog-creature could. It had been, up until now, the most exciting thing that had happened to them all day. And just what he had been hoping for.[break][break]
An appraising look revealed quite the interesting pair. A girl who was half-pink, half-brown- almost like candy or something- and a strange little fox creature that looked eerily reminiscent of a Vulpix, but was definitely not the breed standard if it was. Not an unpleasant pair, he decided, and certainly not one to be wary of. A pretty pair, even. Closing his eyes briefly- and noticeably so- he locked minds with Fae: as always, the Eeevee seemed perfectly at peace.[break][break]
Sol's eyes snapped open, like a camera after a snapshot. "Don't worry about it," he said, "It happens, especially if Pokemon are fresh to the whole training thing." A large assumption on his part, but it was the sort of passing judgement he was comfortable in making.[break][break]
"So," he continued, "what was that all about? I take it you're not out here on a run."

I AM NOT THROWING AWAY MY SHOT Lily tilted her head and smiled sheepishly, finally putting the squirming Vulpix on the ground. "Stay there," she said firmly. Snow gave her an annoyed looked but lay primly at her side, her petite paws folded over one another. Lily's face turned bright red when the boy commented on her Pokemon's training. Was it so obvious? She and Snow had spent the last five years together, and Lily still had trouble keeping her partner in line. It was infuriating. Lily looked down at Snow, who stared up at her with the most innocent of looks of her face. One would find it hard to believe that the little fox had just led her trainer on a wild goose chase. "Caterpie," Lily said in exasperation, rubbing her face while Snow yawned at her feet. "This numbskull decided it would be a great idea to attack a Caterpie and chase it halfway through the forest," the trainer explained, crossing her arms and giving Snow a dirty look. The Vulpix, bored with being scolded, rose to her feet and approached the other trainer's Eevee, sniffing it curiously. Lily watched the interaction with mild amusement, not believing how Snow could be so wild chasing after that poor Caterpie to being so gentle with the boy's Eevee. "She's a mess," Lily added, shaking her head. Turning her attention back to the other trainer, she smiled again and said, "I'm Lilith, by the way. Most people just call me Lily."

[nospaces] [attr="class","spellbound-text"]Sol Chance arched an eyebrow in amusement. "Caterpie, huh?" he muttered. Not the most impressive prey. [break][break]
"Sounds like you need a leash," he jokingly jabbed with a smirk.[break][break]
As the strange, white Vulpix approached his Eevee, the interaction piqued a casual interest from both trainer and Pokemon. Sol primarily watched because had never seen such a strange Vulpix before and, given the circumstances, was curious to see if it was going to do anything odd to his Pokemon. And Fae the Eevee did not seem particularly interested in the Vulpix- at least not in the same way that the Vulpix seemed interested in it. Fae tilted her head as it approached and watched it with cool, dark eyes. Suddenly, Fae reached up with a single dainty paw and attempted to bop the Vulpix on the nose, earning a small grunt of laughter from Sol before he turned his attention back to the newly introduced Lilith.[break][break]
"It's nice to meet you, Lily," he said simply and with a polite nod.[break][break]
It seemed to be time for introductions, and the boy was eager to introduce himself. Raising a hand to touch his own chest, Sol smirked and closed his eyes slightly, calling up his most proud expression. "I am Sol Chance," he said.[break][break]
He flashed a quick grin. "Too short for a nickname, so you can just call me Sol."[break][break]
With introductions out of the way, his mind turned back to what seemed to be the common thread between them: Pokemon.
"Say," he continued, "that is a Vulpix right? Doesn't really look like any particular one I have seen before."

I AM NOT THROWING AWAY MY SHOT The trainer grimace. Maybe she did need a leash for Snow, at least where bug Pokemon were concerned. It seemed rather futile, considering the fox spent most of her time snoozing in Lily's backpack, but she certainly needed to be more prepared for her partner's antics. She looked down at Snow again, who was still sniffing at the boy's Eevee. The little fox's blue eyes widened as she was booped on the nose, and she took a surprised step back. Lily chuckled as Snow shook her head, as if ridding herself of germs. The Vulpix yipped in a friendly manner, obviously not too bothered by the Eevee's transgressions. Lily watched with a raised eyebrow as the boy prepared himself for his introduction. After he spoke his name, Lily looked around, half-expecting fireworks or a light show for such a flamboyant introduction. But none came, and she smiled. "Well, it's a pleasure to meet you, Sol," she said with a pleasant smile. She looked down at Snow as Sol asked about her, and her smile widened with pure affection as she regarded the little white fox. "It's a funny story, really. My dad is an avid traveler. He made it his goal to give each of us a Pokemon from a different region, I guess to inspire us to travel or something. Anyways, this guy from Alola brought a litter of Vulpix from his region to sell in Vega City. That's where I'm from, by the way. My dad was lucky enough to get the last one. And we've been together ever since." She looked back up at the boy, wondering if her story made any sense to him. She was notorious for going off on tangents and twisting her words around when she spoke, especially when she talked about Snow. The fox had returned to her side and was tugging on her shoelaces. Lily reached around and dug into the side pocket of her backpack, pulling out a bright pink poffin. She placed it on the ground next to her Pokemon, who began munching on it happily. "Oh, would...would your Eevee like one as well?" she asked. After all, it was rude for her Pokemon to enjoy a snack without at least offering.

[nospaces] [attr="class","spellbound-text"]Fae beamed- as much as a Pokemon could do so- in self-satisfaction and amusement as the Vulpix yipped at her. Fae gave a single, soft yip in response, before inclining her head ever so slightly- a small bow from the small pup. An olive branch, if Sol had to hazard a guess.[break][break]
While the tiny and cute- though Sol would never admit to thinking that- Pokemon continued their own interactions, sol instead turned his attention to Lily, his mind now on more professional matters- the matter of Pokemon. But his mind latched on to two details in particular: first, the Vulpix hailed from Alola, which would explain the oddity. And secondly, the girl also hailed from Vega City. Dutifully, Sol Chance made notes of both in his mind.[break][break]
"Alola. . . I can't say I know much about that. Must be an interesting place if it can do that kind of stuff to a species," he said, noncommittally.[break][break]
And then the girl offered Fae a snack after she had gotten one for her own Pokemon. Fae the Eevee had returned dutifully to Sol's side after the Vulpix had broken, interest between them mutually lost. Sol cocked an eyebrow, and continued looking straight forward, not breaking eye contact or changing his line of sight from the girl.[break][break]
"I'm not sure," he said, vision still directed at the girl, "do you, Fae?"[break][break]
Suddenly, spirits collided for a brief moment as the contents of each others hearts and were laid bare before both trainer and Pokemon. Yes, was the answer to that, and it was very plain: Fae did not- and truthfully, could not- hide the fact that she wanted one of the poffins as well.[break][break]
"She does," he confirmed, severing the connection almost as quickly as he had established it.[break][break]
"So," he said faux casually, trying not to blush in embarrassment, "how much do I owe you for that poffin?"

I AM NOT THROWING AWAY MY SHOT Lily looked up from her feasting Pokemon as Sol spoke. She didn't really know much about Alola, to be completely honest. Her father had told her many stories about the region, usually punctuated by him getting a nasty sunburn every two days. But the way he described the intense weather changes from island to island had been fascinating to the ever-imaginative Lily. Lily was already mentally deciding which poffin to give Fae when Sol gave her permission. The teenager smiled brightly and began digging in her backpack for her bag of poffins. It was always hard to tell what flavor a Pokemon would like, so she tended to keep a variety with her. Plus, Snow was picky as the day was long. After much fiddling with her bag, Lily pulled out a pale pink poffin. It was the exact same as the one she gave Snow, and who could possibly resist a sweet poffin? She knelt and tenderly placed it on the ground before Fae, smiling all the while. She resumed her full height. The girl looked at him in confusion for a moment. How much did he owe her? What kind of question was that. Then she laughed. ”You don’t owe me anything, silly.” She smiled knowingly down at her Vulpix, who had almost finished off the snack. ”Snow loves poffins, and she can never decide which one she wants, so I have plenty to spare. Consider it a gift,” she said, looking back at Sol. Studying him carefully with her mismatched eyes, she suddenly asked, ”So what brings you all the way out here? This place can’t be good for much unless you have a thing for bugs.” She said the last part with a bit of disdain. Not all bugs were bad, she supposed, but she wasn’t fond of most of them.

The girl stirred, gingerly placing a poffin before Fae and the little Eevee gave a small bark of thanks, before gratefully taking a chunk out of it. Still, Sol Chance watched with wariness: both due to the fact that he was not completely comfortable taking food from a stranger and for the very fact that the girl was a stranger. The world could be a dangerous place, and even a teenage girl out for a forest stroll could be a threat. But he said nothing, not yet. Though his doubts intensified at the mention of a gift, and he clutched his fists together. He took a single breath and relaxed; with that, he shrugged. "I just don't like to, you know, just take things from people," explained Sol, "never really been one for charity."As Fae munched on the poffin, the girl asked what Sol was doing out in Kaxyl Forest. "I could ask you the same question," shot back Sol Chance with immediacy, a sly grin creeping over his face, the white of his teeth forming a bright wedge on his face as a certain mischief entered his eyes. "Like you said, not much reason to come out this way, unless you're into bugs. And not many people 'cept for some real super nerds go out of their way for those."
Still, he relented and closed his blue-grey eyes as his grin settled into an easier, self-satisfied smile. "Though if you want to know, I'll tell you," he continued, "Fae and I just came from Vega. We're on our own adventure.""So," he said, "I think I will ask: what about you?"
