Veronika woke up rather weary that morning. Her bedroom, decorated as it had been for the past couple of years, with nothing on the white walls and an empty dresser with the exception of an alarm clock. The young woman let out a yawn before stretching out her arms and gingerly covering herself back up with her blanket. “Mom,” Veronika called out. “Are you making breakfast today or am I?” The question was met with an eerie silence. “Mom?” Veronika repeated her attempts, which was once again met with silence.
That was strange. It was too early for her to be out, and Sabrina Lopes was never up after her daughter. The young woman rubbed her eye and got out of bed, trying to shake any inch of fatigue out of her face before letting out a yawn. “Mom!” Veronika spoke with much more of a stern voice, when her eyes met with a room that was all too familiar to her.
Oh yeah… she thought. I suppose I’m the one who’s making breakfast from now on…
Yesterday had been a nightmare. The worst day of Veronika Lopes’s life. It was the day she had to send her own mother to jail, and now, suddenly, she was all alone. The young adult suddenly felt even more tired than she had been when she first got out of bed, but more than that she needed to get out of the house. She couldn’t stand how she could recognize every detail of the mess, untouched since her mother had been taken.
Bzzt bzzt! Bzzt bzzt!
Something was vibrating loudly. The young woman followed the sound back into her bedroom, where a light was flashing on the carpeted floor. In the madness of the previous day, she must’ve forgotten to return her phone to its proper place atop her nightstand. Instead, she had allowed it to slip right out of her hand as she had just collapsed into her mattress. It was a miracle, really. The young woman didn’t even remember crying before going to sleep.
Veronika was just too late as she grabbed the phone that had been done buzzing. Nicole was the name that was listed as the person who had tried to get a hold of her. What?! Had she found out already? How?! She didn’t remember telling anyone! The young woman was about to tap the call button when the phone let out a bit of a double buzz before a text appeared.
“Where are you?” the text read before letting out the same buzz. “Do you really have no idea how cute these Pokemon are? They aren’t going to be here forever.”
Typical Nicole. Most people spoke chat speak, but Nicole was one of those few people who would rather keep their grammar in tact at all times. She thought that chat speak was dumb, and would much rather text so that people could actually understand what she was saying. Veronika supposed she couldn’t really fault her for that, seeing as she, too, had made a habit of doing the same.
Tic tic tic tic!
“What are you talking about?” The phone made its usual ticking noise at each key that the young woman pressed. She was just about to press the send button when she remembered the conversation she had with Nicole.
Veronika had been overwhelmed by grief, and out of all her friends, Nicole was the only one who drove down to see how she was doing. That was fine, because Veronika would have wanted it that way even if the circumstances made it impossible for her other friends to come. Veronika told Nicole that she intended to go on a Pokemon journey after this, but never told her why. Nicole then told her to go over to her house at nine in the morning, and pick up a very special Pokemon for her Starter.
No no no!
Veronika erased everything she wrote and desperately typed again. “I’m so so sorry, Nicci!” Veronika texted, using her friend’s nickname. “I know this sounds crazy, but I totally forgot.”
“Maybe you should wait a bit to start your journey,” Nicole wrote. “I mean, I still think you should come over now and pick these one of these cuties, but don’t you think you need time to process everything that just happened? Your mom’s in jail right now.”
Veronika let out a sigh. Postponing the journey had occurred to her many times, but she knew she had to stay strong. “You know I can’t do that,” she explained. “Staying in this house right now is worse than cancer! I’ll be there in fifteen minutes, just reserve a few for me to look at.”
“You’re lucky there are a lot of these little guys,” Nicole texted as Veronika began going through her morning routine. Brushing her teeth, hair, putting on some basic makeup, all that fun stuff. “I’d keep all of them myself if I could. These Pokemon are just so cute, you have no idea!”
Veronika grabbed her phone, giving it a bit of a mischievous smirk. “Can you tell me what kind of Pokemon?”
“Veronika Lopes!” The young woman could practically hear Nicole’s scolding tone. “How many times do I have to tell you? If I told you what the Pokemon were, it wouldn’t be a surprise, now would it?” Veronika sighed and rolled her eyes as she began walking out the door. “But! All I can say is that they’re from the best breeders in all of Stellara! Oh, did I mention they were cute?”
Veronika rolled her eyes again as she practically slammed the door behind her and texted as she searched for the key to properly lock the door. “Only about a million times…”
