They'd agreed to meet later that day, or the next, in an empty area in Vega city where they could battle. It was to be a friendly battle between fellow trainers and friends, and if Honoka was being honest it would be good experience for her. It had been a little while since she'd last battled and she was looking forward to a friendly spar. All of her Pokemon were still fairly young, so she didn't expect it to last terribly long, but it would still be nice. She hadn't bothered changing out of her Yukata. No need, seeing as she wouldn't be using her whip today, so she wouldn't need to move around too much. She was at the discussed place, a large field on one side of the festivities that they could use without worrying about accidentally hitting anyone, or anyone getting in the way or anything. Plenty of space, and the weather was being decidedly agreeable. Honoka would be able to see the other woman coming from a ways off. Aside from the place and time they hadn't determined anything else. She couldn't help but wonder what else Elinda had up her sleeve. She knew about the Beldum and Skarmory, but she was sure she had more than just the two. Honoka hadn't met any of her other Pokemon as of yet, but she had a feeling there would probably be more steel types. She would rock back on her heels, hands resting comfortably on her hips, and look around to see if she could spot Elinda coming. She wasn't exactly early, but nor was Elinda late at this point. And she had a feeling Elinda was one to be punctual if she could help it.

We're painted red to fit right in This was going to be good. Elinda had long since learned to trust her gut on such things, and this was no exception. Since coming to Stellara the woman had been largely keeping to herself as a trainer. Traveling with her Pokemon but no one else, largely battling wild Pokemon that challenged them. It was a simple way of doing things, and while a bit slower than most forms of training it had its own merits. They did things at their own pace, without outside pressure to improve faster than they were comfortable with. Did things how they wanted to do them. Even with that said, though.... There was nothing quite like challenging another trainer to a battle. Wild Pokemon tended to be tough fighters but unfocused ones. More concerned with survival than actually winning fights, and that meant that they were equally liable to flee or avoid conflict at all if they could. By extension they rarely had the skill or experience needed to offer a true challenge, and those that did were quite often among the toughest challenges a trainer could face - albeit few and far between. Trainers, however, were an entirely different beast. They were focused, practiced, and weren't likely to flee from a fight because they wanted to win just as much as you did. Usually, anyways. Those that didn't were often weeded out relatively early on, lacking the resolve needed to commit to such self improvement. And under normal circumstances Elinda wouldn't bother to take on newer trainers as there was little to be found in it for her. That said, her team was new and the Pokemon who weren't had fallen out of shape. It would be a good test, and a good learning experience for the newer members. More to the point.... Elinda had a good feeling about the challenger, and a suspicion that they wouldn't disappoint despite their relative inexperience. Speaking of... "It's a good spot." Elinda called out, spotting Honoka as the older trainer approached the agreed upon location from the direction Vega was in. Still dressed in her dark shirt, pants and boots with her coat's normal crimson red offset by the dimmer lighting, Elinda looked just as much at home in that open field as she had back in the city - really, in all of the locations that she and Honoka had met in before. Hovering over the trainer's shoulder was Beldum as per usual, the Steel type dipping slightly as a gust of wind caught it, pulling on his trainer's hair and coat in the process as she moved to stand opposite Honoka and facing the younger trainer. "Shall we?" Elinda asked, voice light and just as relaxed as the small quirk at the edge of her lips, the beginnings of a grin. Unclipping a Pokeball from her belt, the older blond spun it in her grip as she waited for the other trainer's response - no need to beat around the bush with pleasantries. They both knew why they were there, and Elinda could feel the prickle of an old, familiar anticipation beginning to crawl over her skin. To say that she was eager to begin would've been an extreme understatement.

"Yeah I didn't think it was too bad. Gives the festival goers something to watch while being out of the way too, if they're interested." She called back, grinning. That thought hadn't really come until now. She thought it was a good spot cause it was safe and out of the way, she hadn't thought about accidentally putting on a show with it until now. Beldum was as usual floating just above Elinda's shoulder. Honoka would press the button on one of her Pokeballs and her Dratini would materialize. She'd put him away earlier, as he kept getting in the way. Try as he might, he was just a little too big to move comfortable through the crowds. It had been a while since she'd last battled another trainer. It was back in Kalos, before she came out here. So to say she was probably rusty was an understatement. But that didn't mean she was going to let that slow her down. Elinda might have been used to Steel types, but Honoka coined herself as a Dragon type trainer. Rusty or not, she could handle this. She was used to difficult Pokemon. "I'm ready if you are." Honoka would ready her Dratini for when Elinda cast out her Pokemon. She had a few ideas depending on what the other trainer sent out, despite the limited moves her Dratini had currently. That was always one of the downsides about new Pokemon, but it was also a lot of fun bonding with them and getting them to where you wanted them to be power wise. This was as good a start as any.

We're painted red to fit right in The only response Elinda had for Honoka's first comment was for her smile to widen a bit. A show? Were they back in the city itself, perhaps, but out here.... something told the older trainer that they weren't going to be disturbed. Not that she particularly cared either way. People weren't able to challenge any of the regional Leagues without doing away with a certain degree of stage fright, and many other such battles were highly publicized depending on the context. None of that mattered to Elinda, though, as it wasn't where her focus was. That was always on her opponent, the real point behind most battles. Who was better, you or them? Who wanted to win more, and who put more effort into making sure that happened? Preparing, training, everything that led up to that moment, everything that made them who they were? When a fight really started what existed outside of that ring rarely mattered. "Oho, starting big are we?" Elinda started as Honoka released her first Pokemon beside where she stood, the older trainer eying up the Dratini with interest. She could already tell at a glance that the Pokemon was a fair bit stronger than it had been when she'd last seen it in the Tucana Rainforest - Elinda didn't need a Pokedex to gather that much. Likely stronger than the majority of the Pokemon that Elinda had on her at the moment, actually, bar Beldum as the sole exception. Even then he could quite likely lose in a direct confrontation. Take Down was his only attack, and there was only so much that could be done to offset that lack of options. Dratini, on the other hand... off the top of her head Elinda remembered two of its moves quite well, Thunder Wave and Extremespeed. Not a pleasant combination to deal with when used correctly, and none of the Pokemon that Elinda had were able to ignore it. Whatever they did they weren't going to be beating the Dragon for speed. Had she her old team, maybe, but neither Scizor nor Steelix were here at the moment. Among the Pokemon that she currently had.... Staryu probably was the ideal choice and likely able to win due to the gap in practical experience, but not without taking a beating. With Beldum still as he was Elinda didn't want to use her ace so soon into the fight. "... alright, then. If you insist." Elinda continued, unclipping one of the newer Pokeballs from her belt after a moment of thought and tossing it out onto the grassy field between the two. Orb popping open after a single bounce, the occupant would appear in a momentary flash of light as Ferroseed dropped down onto the soft ground, sinking an inch or two into the grass. "Your play now." Elinda said, grin still on her face as she watched the other pair, Ferroseed simply sitting where he'd emerged and blankly watching the Dratini - all but waiting for the other Pokemon to make the first move.

"Against you? I feel like you're the go big or go home type. I know I am." She planted her hands on her hips and shifted her weight to one foot. Her grin would widen in excitement, the kind she hadn't felt for a while, when Elinda released her Pokemon. "Oh man! A Ferroseed!" Her grin widened, and she found herself leaning forward slightly. Ok, she could work with that. She didn't remember if she had encountered a Ferroseed during her time on the family ranch, but she had a basic idea about them. Steel and Grass, and it was covered in sharp green steel thorns. She hadn't fought one, but she was looking forward to it. Her Dratini would rear up taller. Kin could tell Honoka was excited, and he was thrilled for this fight too. It was a friendly spar with someone he trusted his trainer with, so a friendly spar was always fun. He was waiting for his trainer's command, though the shifting of his tail under him would give away his eagerness. Honoka leaned back again, thinking. Those thorns had to hurt if touched, though she didn't know Ferroseed's ability. So Wrap wasn't maybe the best idea, but then she wasn't sure on its resistances, either. It'd be a bit of a learning process, then. "Ok, Kin, lets give this a try. Wrap him up and thunder wave point blank. Try not to let him catch you." Her Dratini would do as asked. Kin would charge at the Ferroseed, slithering low and fast along the ground, uninhibited by his trainers weight like last time. He would attempt to Wrap the Ferroseed and, while wrapped, use Thunder Wave on him point blank. If he found himself unable to Wrap the Ferroseed, he'd try to use the secondary attack from a further distance.

We're painted red to fit right in On that count Honoka was very much correct, although it was unfortunately a sentiment that Elinda wasn't able to follow through on quite yet. With time, perhaps, once Beldum began to evolve again and the rest of her team began to catch up. Until then, though, battles weren't likely to look like all that much beyond clumsy scuffles between relatively young fighters. It was good that Honoka was excited, though, all the more so that her Pokemon was as well - the best fights always involved trainers and teams that were invested from the start. This was going to be an interesting match up, though. As Elinda had noted before, in a contest of brute strength her Pokemon weren't likely to win, and Dratini was certainly no slouch despite being so young. Aside from being fairly large for his age the Dragon was every bit as fast as Elinda had expected he would be as the Dragon quickly moved to follow the younger trainer's commands... but there lay the problem. There were a great many reasons that Elinda had led her opening with Ferroseed rather than one of her others, Staryu aside. It wasn't just a matter of typing, either, but of time. Ferroseed was the first Pokemon that Elinda had "caught" after arriving in the Stellara region, and they'd been together for over two weeks by this point. Enough time for them to connect in a way that Elinda couldn't quite explain in words but that had always come as second nature to her, and one that yielded some very tangible benefits as a trainer. While Skarmory was getting there Aron wasn't even close, but Ferroseed.... Elinda's style of fighting had always focused more on letting the Pokemon make snap decisions on their own, and Ferroseed had proven from the start that he had a mind of his own. "First rule of battle, know your enemy." Elinda called out to Honoka with a grin. As Dratini rushed towards Ferroseed the Steel type wouldn't even make an effort to dodge - like his trainer the Pokemon knew from the instant he saw the Dragon move that any such attempt would be a futile one. Instead he did the opposite, low Growl emanating from within his shell as Ferroseed charged into Dratini's attack, intending to Tackle the Pokemon as the Dragon's coils wrapped around him. More to the point, however, with the Pokemon now off balance and likely Wrapped by Kin Ferroseed hoped to trap the larger Pokemon's coils underneath his body and the ground, pinning the Dragon in place as his Iron Barbs dug into the other Pokemon's scales. Summary: Growl used, lowering Kin's attack by one stage, followed by Tackle as Ferroseed is Wrapped and hit with Thunder Wave. Iron Barbs activated for moderate damage. Ferroseed: Paralyzed 1/3

"Oooh! Good one!" She would call aloud, watching Kin wrap around the Ferroseed that, on impact, would be knocked off balance and fall over, Kin wrapped around it and somewhat trapped under it. She hadn't thought of that as a counter to her attack. It was obvious to her that even though Kin's scales were tough, the thorns on Ferroseed still hurt a fair amount. And the Ferroseed had Growled, too, meaning Kin's attack wasn't as effective as she'd hoped it would be. At least the Thunder Wave had worked. Kin had mostly physical attacks right now as he was. And he was stuck under Elinda's Pokemon, so most of those likely wouldn't work well. As they were, they could use Wrap again, but they could also try to get out from under the Ferroseed. Guess Kin wasn't as good a match up here as I had thought, Honoka thought to herself. She was thinking about her next move. Kin really should get out of there, and see what kind of damage he can do without getting further damaged himself. Idea formed, she'd grin back at Elinda. "Good advice, though when you haven't fought a specific pokemon, that can be easier said than done. Okay Kin, they want a hug, give them a hug. Not too long, though." Her Dratini would follow her initiative, squeezing the Ferroseed he was already wrapped around in an effort to do some kind of damage. The Iron Barbs would poke and prod painfully, making Kin let go sooner than he might have with a different Pokemon. He'd then wiggle under the Pokemon in an attempt to get out from underneath it. In theory, it wouldn't be able to follow much, what with Thunder Wave having been successful, but it looked like a fairly heavy Pokemon as well.
Summary: Kin was hit by Ferroseed's tackle. Attempted to Wrap again to deal damage, then attempted to wiggle out from under Ferroseed to get away. We're painted red to fit right in This was going to be a drawn out fight, there was no question of that. Neither Pokemon was a particularly great match up against the other, plain and simple. Dratini had a solid speed advantage and that was even further emphasized by the fact that it knew Thunder Wave - with Ferroseed that was going to slow the battle to a crawl. It wasn't going to be able to catch the Dragon even under ideal conditions and the paralysis was going to prevent the Grass type from getting out attacks nearly as often as it'd normally be capable of. On top of the level advantage that would normally be more than enough for a Pokemon to win a match practically unscathed. Thankfully, typing and ability changed that. Very few Pokemon actively resisted Normal attacks and even fewer still resisted Dragon, and Steel just happened to be one of them. As far as Elinda knew Kin only had Normal type moves for damaging attacks, and that type resistance would hopefully even the playing field as far as levels were concerned. Beyond that Ferroseed as a species were very well known for their defensive abilities even before typing came into play... and while they admittedly lacked in offensive prowess compared to others, Iron Barbs would make up the difference here. With everything taken into account it was really more a question of endurance than skill at this point with both Pokemon so low leveled. "Fair enough, I suppose. I'd been under the impression that most of the newer trainers your age started your journeys with Pokedex in hand, though." Elinda called back in response. The comment had been equal parts a jab and a hint - battles were opportunities for growth. Normally she admittedly wouldn't have offered such an olive branch to an opponent, but they'd made a deal when they'd first met and the girl had handed off Skarmory into Elinda's care. She'd already matched the trade with another, but advice was still something Elinda could readily give. Not that she probably needed it here, though, as Ferroseed froze up, victim of the earlier Thunder Wave taking effect. Unable to move it was able to do nothing as Dratini used Wrap again, although the damage was still lessened a bit by his earlier use of Growl - the same could not be said of his ability, however, barbs digging into Dratini's scales again to inflict additional damage on contact. Summary: Paralysis in effect, no moves made. Hit by Wrap, Iron Barbs activated for minor damage. Ferroseed: Paralyzed 2/3

Aside from the thorny Pokemon hurting her Dratini again, she thought that went decently, as she watched her Dratini wriggle out from under the Ferroseed. Neither one seemed to be doing a ton of damage to the other, meaning this would be a longer fight. Though, if she had to guess, she'd say her Dratini was looking a little worse than the Ferroseed. But it was also hard to tell with Steel types, sometimes. The paralysis had been a good idea though, for what it was. Both of their Pokemon were still fairly low in power level, so what could have been an epic battle was just a battle. Still good though. "Ah, well, yeah I have one, but I hadn't had a Ferroseed in it until now." Speaking of, the younger of the two would pull out her 'dex quick, flipping the small device open to get a read of the Ferroseed for the future. She'd glance quickly at the information on the screen, thinking of some sort of strategy that might work for this. Both she and Kin needed the experience, so she didn't want to switch out the Dratini just yet if she didn't have to. The dragon Pokemon would slither back toward Honoka, its scales visibly scratched in some places from Ferroseed's thorns. From what the 'dex told her, which was about as much as she expected, it had the ability Iron Barbs. So those thorns weren't just for show, then. Steel/Grass, which made sense. It was a seed made of metal. It didn't seem like there was going to be away around the Ferroseed's ability, not with her Dratini anyway. They could give something else one more shot before Honoka would decide whether or not to switch out Kin for someone else. "Give him a look, Kin, and see what you can do." Her Dratini would Leer at the yet paralyzed Ferroseed, and then would dash at it with Extreme Speed, its lowered attack matching the other Pokemon's now lowered defense. Kin himself was trying to find a physical way around the Iron Barbs, but he also knew he wouldn't hold up long with the damage those did if he kept throwing himself at it. Still, it was what he kept doing, as after he used Extreme Speed the first time, Kin would circle around behind the Ferroseed to hit it again with the same attack, darting around to try to stay out of whatever reach it had as wel.
Summary: Kin was damaged again by Iron Barbs, managed to get out from under Ferroseed. Used Leer, then used Extreme Speed to slam into Ferroseed for some damage. Circled around behind and used Extreme Speed in the same manner again. We're painted red to fit right in It was an interesting idea, the Pokedex. To be entirely honest Elinda hadn't been all that sure how she'd felt about the device when mention of it had first started to make the rounds. From a certain standpoint it was a laudable innovation - a collection of knowledge to help trainers along, to allow them to better care for their Pokemon and better aide them in battles. That had certainly been the intent of a certain Samuel Oak, at least from what she knew of the man and his work. At the same time, however, there was another side to the idea that left Elinda with far more conflicted feelings. To have so much information instantly accessible greatly reduced the need to learn it when the alternative was a button press away. She had never possessed one during her time as they simply didn't exist, and Elinda had been fine with that. It pushed her to improve and become a better trainer than she might otherwise have been. Neither Ryusuke nor Shiori possessed them, either, as they'd started out as trainers either on their own or under her tutelage rather than visiting the regional professor. But what of those prospective trainers that didn't have any of those opportunities or privileges? Not all of them were so lucky. It was all idle musings, of course, but they were at the forefront of the older trainer's mind as Honoka pulled the electronic out and directed it to Ferroseed. What Elinda had expected was for Honoka to switch in one of her other Pokemon, and Elinda's own hand had been absentmindedly resting on her belt to respond in kind. Ferroseed had been well chosen for this match up, and despite the level disadvantage the older blond wouldn't have sent him out unless she thought he could win. A small frown would pull at the corner of her mouth as Honoka did exactly the opposite, though. Upsets did happen and Elinda would be the first to admit it, but it was also on the trainer to course correct when it was needed. Tactics tended to be the domain of the Pokemon who was fighting and needed to make the snap decisions, but without someone guiding strategy it became all too easy for poor decisions to be made. Honoka seemed to be far too focused on the here and now rather than what came later - even if Kin was able to pull a win out of this he would be too far gone to hold out for another round, effectively securing a free knock out for Elinda's team even if Ferroseed were to faint as well. The gears were definitely turning in the younger blond's head if her expression was anything to go by, but a lack of experience was making itself known. Ferroseed, meanwhile, had his head - or rough equivalent - completely in the game as the battle continued. Shaking off the earlier bout of paralysis, the Steel type was still too slow and caught completely off guard as the Dratini rushed him, colliding into his body with a painful degree of force. Not without scratching themselves on his body again, however, and rather than trying to fight the collision Ferroseed allowed his body to roll off of it as Kin continued on, his body already facing the Dragon as they rushed in for a second attack. Knowing what to expect this time allowed Ferroseed to at least respond in kind as dodging was impossible - struck again by a second Extremespeed, Ferroseed would slam into Dratini head on with Tackle. Summary: Hit by Extremespeed, Iron Barbs activated. Hit by second Extremespeed, although timing his Tackle to hit Kin with the same collision. Iron Barbs activated again. Ferroseed: Paralyzed 3/3
