PERSONALITY, Ermenesande (or ‘Ernie’, as she prefers to be called) puts on a brave, colorful face, for someone who feels well and truly dead inside. She is a chronic napper, alarm-misser, and always guarunteed to be at least twenty minutes late to any event. It’s not her fault, not really; she’s just spent her entire life being a strung-out overachiever, trying to prove herself to both a disbelieving field of peers and two sets of parents who are both convinced she will never amount to anything. It’s been a constant fight to not let their augiries become self-fulfilling prophecies, and she refuses to let herself face up to the fact that she could hold the entire world in the palm of her hands and they still would not see it as any great achievement.
Ernie subsists on a diet of coffee and migraine pills. She never slows down, unless she’s sleeping, and is always in motion: spinning her chair, tapping her foot, playing with her hair (when it’s long enough to play with). Staying in one place makes her feel itchy, and only by always being busy with something can she stave off the constant anxiety hovering just behind her like a beast about to strike. Her eternal locomotion often presents itself in changes in her physical appearance: most frequently, it is a new hair color or style; other changes include piercings, nails, and eye colors via colored contacts. She has a closet full of wigs and extensions and has become a master of doing it herself; if her career in programming doesn’t work out, she could always survive as a cosmetologist.
Despite— or perhaps in spite of— all her energy, Ernie tends to be lazy. She is always on the lookout for the quickest and fastest workaround for whatever it is she’s doing, whether it’s whipping something up for a client in Java or tying a mop to the Roomba to clean the house, she’s the queen of shortcuts. This has led to a number of unfortunate dye jobs with her hair, because for as clever as she is, she never seems to learn there are some things you simply cannot cut corners with. She believes that if she gets the trophy for being first, it means she’s the best, regardless of the actual product which results at the end of the task
Being the best at things is very important to Ernie. She likes to express it, loudly and often, and make sure everyone knows. Her confidence is rock-solid and in your face, and it seems like every other word out of her mouth is about her and her achievements. She does a pretty good job of not acting like the crumbling, anxious mess that she truly feels like inside; looking at her, interacting with her, one could never tell. She doesn’t even like to talk about her struggles to those who are close to her, few as they are. To compensate, she complains about the little things: chipped nails, slow computers, the guy at the coffee house pronouncing her name wrong. She is a master of distraction and suggestion, and the frilly, conceited airs she puts on are mainly just a front to make it through another day of living up to impossible expectations.
Her fast-talking, self-centered persona coupled with her frequently neon-colored, in-your-face appearance can make her a tough pill to swallow, especially at first impressions. She is sarcastic, snappy, and always acts like she has somewhere better to be, and more important things to be doing. She has a difficult time empathizing with other people, has no pity, and can come off cold and heartless— but, in Ernie’s eyes, interpersonal relationships are a distraction, a speedbump on the road trying to stop her from reaching her goals (whichever they might be, at the time). If presenting as an asshole prevents this from being an issue, then it seems like the opposite of a problem.
Ernie would like everyone to think she sees Pokemon as merely tools for a job, but it isn’t so— the little monsters are the only individuals she will willingly show affection towards, even if she tries to do it when no one is watching. Her Porygon, Gazpacho, is one of the only living beings to have ever seen Ernie’s sensitive side, and it is a secret they guard most jealously, a perk they would never trade for the world… of course, they do threaten to blab all of Ernie’s secrets, just to watch the girl squirm. Ernie would say Gaz is her only real friend, and Gaz would echo that sentiment.
