The message board posting had brought one young trainer from spelunking in the Gurios Mountain caves a little further north to Rana Town. A young man by the name of Mikey was hosting battles at a makeshift battlefield in his back yard and taking on any challengers willing to swing by. Darcy had to admit it sounded slightly sketchy from a certain perspective, but he also didn't want to pass up the chance to get some experience battling real trainers instead of just wild Pokemon under his belt. Fortunately for our intrepid young hero, his recent addition of a Ralts to the team, Princess, had made most of his traveling as simple as a Teleport command. Teleport worked best when you knew where you were headed, it was true, but traveling by foot or bike to a place and teleporting back to your starting point later was a simple breeze.
Darcy rounded a corner and spotted a small crowd around the rear end of a house.
"Wow Mikey, your Electrike is really something else!" A young girl squealed to a boy standing at one edge, petting the green dog.
"Yeah, my brother bred him for me. Our teamwork's pretty good." He wiped his upper lip in an attempt to be casually confident, though to Darcy's eye it made him look a little snot nosed. He was younger than Darcy, maybe in his early teens at best. No wonder his username referred to him as an Ace Trainer.
A young man with glasses was cradling a bruised and battered looking Slowpoke in his arms. Darcy stopped by and kneeled next to him.
"Is your Slowpoke okay?"
"Slopey's fine, but damn." The glasses wearing man pulled out a small notebook from his pocket, "All of my information said this would be an easy battle. I never expected those kinds of attacks."
Darcy's face blanched slightly. So Mikey wouldn't be a pushover? He wondered if he could keep up with the other's combat style.
"Anybody else wanna go a round?" The young man called into the crowd. Several people jeered, but no one seemed ready to accept the challenge.
Darcy stood, clenching his fist. He couldn't be a coward and avoid his first battle just because of his nerves. No, he had to do this for himself and for his Pokemon. What would Lime say if he saw him backing out now? It would be mortifying.
"I'll take you on." Darcy's normally soft voice barely fought over the crowd, but it succeeded.
"Sweet! I'm on a roll today!" The other young man moved to the rough circle carved out for trainers on the other end. "How many Pokemon d'you got?"
"Three." Darcy replied, moving to his own space opposite Mikey.
"Three on Three? Awesome! Name's Mikey."
"I'm Darcy. Pleased to meet you."
"We'll see how pleased you are when my team's through with you. Especially since you kinda look like a pushover." The ace trainer's teasing stained Darcy's cheeks with a fiery blush. Who insulted their opponent right before a match?!?
He's probably just trying to get in my head. Put me off balance a little.
Darcy's thoughts cleared slightly and he took a deep breath. He'd lived with Lime for a year; any attempts at jostling him with a couple words to get a rise out of him were pointless by comparison. Nobody could get under his skin like that guy. His lips parted into something between a grin and a baring of teeth.
Mikey, noticing the change in expression on his opponents face, offered his own grin. "Yeah, let's get fired up!"
The ace trainer pulled a Pokeball from his belt, "Electrike did fine in that last battle, so I won't even use him. Come on out, Tedd!"
The Teddiursa that appeared from it's Pokeball earned a few squeals of delight from some of the girls in the small crowd. Darcy shifted his messenger bag, grabbing one of the Pokeballs from the magnetic strip he kept his team on there with.
"It's time to start our first real battle." Darcy whispered to the Pokeball before expanding it and flinging it into the air. "Come on out, Diva!" ----- 696 words so far ; Post 1 of ? in quest. To be continued...

"A'right Tedd, let's put the pressure on 'em! Covet!"
The Teddiursa hopped forward happily, adorably. It was almost unsettling to think it was an attack, but as it neared the Popplio it swung out a playful claw that suddenly flashed white-hot with power. The strike sent Diva reeling backwards, and were she holding an item would've undoubtedly stolen it away. Darcy knew there were attacks like that, but he hadn't counted on encountering one so soon.
The Popplio shook herself off. It was a strong hit, but she was also made of stronger stuff than that. She barked a little at the Teddiursa before receiving her own first command,
"Aqua Ring!" Darcy called, watching as the helix of water water surrounded his sea-lion in a faint, shimmering aurora of droplets. It would help mitigate the damage she was taking with each passing second, but wouldn't heal her all in one fell swoop.
"Hey, don't let it heal up Tedd, get in there with a Fury Swipes and show that seal what you're made of!" Mikey called confidently.
The Teddiursa launched forward, claws on either paw gleaming in the cruel light of day. Diva huffed at the approach of the Teddiursa, and of being called a mere seal. How dare that trainer call her something so insulting!
"Don't just let it get that close Diva! Growl at it!" Darcy called.
The Popplio leapt backwards, the Teddiursa's claws missing their mark as she let out an adorable squeal of a bark that made the Teddiursa pause, lowering his physical attack.
"Fury Swipes might be pretty strong when all of the hits connect," Darcy said, crossing his arms, "but it's not the most accurate of attacks."
"You think I don't know that?" Mikey replied, gritting his teeth. He'd counted on the quiet boy in the maroon hoodie to be as terrible at battle as the last one. If only he hadn't shot his mouth off about not using Electrike this battle in front of the girls! One Discharge would've easily downed the Popplio.
"Disarming Voice." Darcy called as the other trainer cursed his earlier decision.
"Wa-wait. Use a quick Baby-Doll Eyes Tedd!" Mikey said, trying to recover from his earlier day dreaming.
Baby-Doll Eyes was a unique little move that caused sparkles to practically shoot from the Teddiursa's eyes as it batted them at the Popplio to lower her attack; unfortunately for Tedd, even as Diva was slightly off put by the watery gaze of the Teddiursa, it had no effect on her special attacking abilities. She spun and released a startlingly cute noise that slammed into the Teddiursa and knocked him backwards. It wasn't the strongest of attacks, but it also had perfect accuracy. The Teddiursa, struck by a sudden swell of emotion, blinked back tears from the hit.
"Tedd, get up in it's face and use Scratch!"
The Teddiursa lurched forward, giving out a gruff battle cry as it plodded across the battlefield with a claw raised. It was adorable, true, and the battle wasn't exactly blood thirsty but Diva was looking better with each passing moment where the little bear was looking worse for wear with each passing attack.
"Water Gun!" Darcy called to the sea-lion. She obliged by shooting a powerful spray directly at the bear.
"Dodge it and keep going!" Mikey cried.
The Teddiursa leapt suddenly, well over the water gun, and spun in the air to land a powerful Scratch across the Popplio's face. The yelp of pain she gave made Darcy gasp slightly. He knew that battles were intense affairs, and training in the wild had proven it, but against another trainer the stress level was entirely different.
"Don't give them time to breathe. While you're nice and close Lick 'em!" The Teddiursa followed his trainer's orders, tongue flopping out to roughly lick the scratch on the Popplio's face.
"Diva, Water Gun while it's close!" Darcy commanded.
The Sea-Lion opened her mouth, almost paralyzed with disgust at the slime the Teddiursa had left behind, and shot a jet of water directly into his gut. The Teddiursa's wind was knocked out of him by the sudden water pressure and he was pushed back across the battlefield.
"Tedd!" Mikey called, noting how the Teddiursa gasped for breath.
"Finish it with a Disarming Voice!"
Darcy's declaration did not fall on deaf ears. The Popplio winked at the Teddiursa as she barked once more, the sound echoing across the battlefield to blast into his ears.
Tedd the Teddiursa had dealt with a lot in his days; he'd been lit on fire, slapped around by an angry beetle, and more. He had never, however, accidentally fallen in love with a sea-lion shouting sweet nothings at him. The fairy-magic infused cry that echoed in his head made him realize that battling the Popplio was the last thing he wanted to do, and between that and the damage he'd already taken the little bear was happy to faint.
Darcy watched their opponent's Pokemon fall unconscious to the ground and cooed to his Popplio. The water helix that had been healing her dissipated, but the Popplio looked good over all. It was surprising how much she could muster when she was healing herself a little over time during a battle.
"You did great Diva!" Darcy called to her, and the Popplio waddled over to preen.
Mikey returned his Pokemon and thought for a moment.
"You gotta switch Pokemon too!"
"Excuse me?" Darcy called.
"This is best of three, right? So you using the same one for more than one round isn't fair."
"I don't think that's how battling works....but okay?" Darcy called back, shifting the Popplio off the battlefield.
(We did great Papa. Now let's see who else we can fight with!)
Darcy thumbed his next Pokeball before releasing a Ralts onto the battlefield.
(Am.....I up?) The Ralts' telepathic voice in Darcy's head echoed her words to Diva.
"You'll do great." Darcy told her, kneeling slightly. "I know you can do this."
"Come on out Star!" Mikey said, releasing his Starly from it's Pokeball. The Starly cried confidently and the Ralts, staring down her opponent, had a small change of expression as her odd ability, Trace, activated. Darcy was still trying to get Princess used to Trace's power, but even in their training she wound up copying some of her opponents mannerisms. The Starly's ego seemed to be rubbing off on her as swiftly as it's Keen Eye.

"Star, Quick Attack to get close!" Mikey's call was clear and fast, and the bird became a blur.
"Princess-" Darcy began his call, but the bird striking her suddenly made him stop. It was damnably fast for such a little thing.
"Awright! Direct hit! Let's keep this up Star."
"Double Team!" Darcy cried, causing the Ralts to suddenly split into multiple copies when she stood.
The next quick attack passed through a clone with ease, leaving the Ralts unharmed. Mikey spat on the ground in annoyance. "If they wanna play that way, let's use our own Double Team Star!" He called.
The Starly's aerial clones were a little more exaggerated than the Ralts' on the ground, and Darcy's eyes narrowed. "Use your Confusion and blast as many as you can!"
The psychic type, charged with copying some of the Starly's confidence, surrounded herself in a faint pink aura as she unleashed a wave of (admittedly weak) telekinetic force. She managed to smack three of the Starlies darting in the air overhead, and unlike the bird's earlier attack this one proved true. The little bird dropped from the sky slightly, shaken by the psionic blast.
"Don't let that little pixie get you down Star, I know you can do this. Let's try a Sand-Attack!"
The Starly's recovery from the Confusion blast was swift, as it dipped towards the ground and flew towards the Ralts clones that were evaporating one by one. It lighted near them and began kicking up a whirlwind of dirt and dust in the face of the little crowd, trying to lower Princess's accuracy.
The Ralts chuckled slightly, a single red eye appearing from underneath her hood of green hair.
"Confusion to stop it!" Darcy declared.
The last of the clones dissipating, the Ralts grabbed the Starly with telekinetic energy before it could continue flapping.
"But....how?!" Mikey called, not understanding how the Ralts could see through the dust storm swirling around her.
"Trace copied your Starly's ability...which according to my Pokedex was Keen Eye." Darcy answered as the Ralts launched the Starly into the ground, hard.
Were they really about to go two for two? The young man hadn't anticipated things moving as rapidly and as smoothly as they seemed to be. The first battle had been more drawn out than this, and the Starly had put some pressure on the Ralts fast but they'd recovered so well.
"We're not out of this yet, so get that smug look off that Ralts's face! Quick Attack!"
The bird rose from the ground and sped at the psychic fairy with murder in it's little eyes. Princess seemed to falter slightly at the expression, or perhaps from the emotions emanating from the bird and his trainer in that moment. The Starly collided with her, sending her to the ground, but didn't let up.
"Just like we practiced now Star, use that move we just learned! Steel Wing!"
Darcy's hand shot out, his mouth twisting into a grimace of horror. He hadn't planned on a bird using a steel type move and as the reflective metallic wing smacked Princess across the face he watched his Ralts go tumbling back to him. She was out cold as she landed in front of him and Darcy knelt to cradle her.
"I'm so sorry Princess. It was all my fault." He felt mortified. One moment of overconfidence had cost the Ralts the battle and gotten her hurt. He returned her to her Pokeball, noting that the Pokemon Center wasn't too far off at least.
Mikey had a shit eating grin on his face as the Starly flapped over to him.
"Isn't it time to switch? Best of three, right?" Darcy called, crossing his arms.
"Oh...yeah." The Ace Trainer deflated a little as he recalled his Starly. Going back on the rules he'd invented on the fly would make him look so uncool in front of the girls. Still, he had an ace up his sleeve. "Too bad for you though. I just hatched this bad girl from an Egg my older brother gave me." He flicked a Pokeball into the air.
"Show 'em what you got, DeeDee!"
A Deino emerged from the Pokeball and Darcy checked his Pokedex for information on it. He felt sorry about the circumstances of it's bruises and blindness, but when he checked it's typing he couldn't help the grin that played across his face.
"Rogue, you're our last chance." He released the Cutiefly into the air; of all of his Pokemon, Rogue was perhaps the most stoked when he found out they were going to be battling that day. The little bee-fly buzzed happily, staring down his opponent.
"THAT'S YOUR LAST POKEMON?" Mikey spat out, trying to cover up his snickering. Without a Pokedex and much traveling experience, the other ace trainer seemed to lack some knowledge about what he was dealing with. "DeeDee could chew that thing up and spit it out in a second!"
(That so? Try it dumbass.) The Cutiefly buzzed. Neither Mikey nor Darcy could understand Pokemon speech, nor could anyone in the crowd. Many of them had joined in Mikey's snickering, though the boy in glasses shifted them up. Mikey's reputation had gone up after his brother had started breeding him rarer Pokemon with Egg Moves; it's how his Electrike had been so strong. Yet apparently no one else in the crowd was familiar with the Pokemon the white haired boy had employed. Still, the young man with glasses lowered his face and grinned darkly. Finally, a traveling trainer was about to put that kid in his place!

"DeeDee, give it a taste of your Dragon Rage!" Mikey shouted, "One shot that pipsqueak of a bug!"
"Rogue..." Darcy called to the buzzing little insect, "lets show this kid what you're capable of."
The Cutiefly buzzed forward, aiming directly at the Deino. Mikey cackled as she opened her maw, allowing blazing flames to form in a slightly draconic shape that rose to meet the advancing bug.
"Aw man, this isn't even gonna be fun." Mikey called, closing his eyes before the attack even impacted, "I was hoping for a bit more of a challenge after that water type you used."
"Mi-mikey..." One of the girls called to him, trying to get him to stop gloating.
"Hit it with a Struggle Bug, and Rogue..." Darcy's voice was fairly even, "give it a bit of fairy flair!"
Mikey opened his eyes, not believing the Cutiefly had survived the impact of the draconic flames. He was perturbed to see it flying through the jet stream of fire; the blue flames were parting around the bug with ease, who was glowing pink of all things. It wasn't even taking a speck of damage!
"Wh-what?" Mikey stepped back, "The hell?"
The Cutiefly spun, his feet wiggling as the flames dispersed around him. The energy that a bug type normally called forth for Struggle Bug collected, yet it was pink and sparkly this time; it was a secret technique fairy type masters could use, transforming the attack into a fairy type move!
"That thing's a-"
"Fairy. Which means all of your dragon type attacks are useless on him. And my fairy type moves?" Darcy's smile may have lacked any real venom, but it was still on his face, "Are going to hit a dark-dragon like your Deino like a ton of bricks."
Case in point, the Fairy-Struggle Bug struck across the Deino's hide and she was launched backwards by the explosions of pixie dust. She struggled to get to her feet.
Mikey's confidence was shot as the Deino collapsed. The one hit knock out in the third round wasn't his, at all! He returned the Deino wordlessly. The crowd that had gathered around him dispersed as his winning streak went up in smoke, brought down by the little bug lazily doing loops around the battle-field back to his trainer.
(Not bad for a louse.)
(Watch your mouth you sack of shi-)
"Can you two just not fight for five minutes. We just won our first battle as a team." Darcy said, getting between the bickering Pokemon. "Speaking of team though, we need to get Princess to the Pokemon Center!"
"If....if I had just kept using Star, I'd have won."
"Well...." Darcy approached, flanked by either Pokemon, "Maybe you shouldn't have picked those battle rules that forced us to switch?" He shrugged at the other young man's disbelief.
Mikey sighed and nodded. Somehow, in his heart of hearts, he knew his destiny was mostly to just help other trainers along somehow. He tossed the other boy a small satchel of coins for his victory before turning to go inside.
Darcy missed the coin toss, though fortunately he had a Popplio to catch them for him. Placing his winnings in the bag, he gave both of his Pokemon a quick smile before turning to leave and head to the nearest Pokemon center. They couldn't keep their Princess waiting, could they?
