Cyngi City was rather different than the parts of the Stellara Region that Darcy had visited thus far, and a much more daunting place than Goldenrod had ever seemed to the white haired youth. Still, he was there for a reason. He'd exchanged emails at a Pokemon Center with one Mrs. Sayuri, Dean of a Pokemon Trainers School in the city. She was looking for trainers to lead classes for the kids who were just beginning to think about going on their Pokemon journeys in a few years time. Darcy wasn't exactly certain he had much to offer, but Mrs. Sayuri had seemed more than pleased when he reached out to her after seeing flyers for the opportunity.
"Well class, uh...um. Hi. I'm Darcy Quin." He began from behind the front desk, staring at two dozen little faces. The slightest of blushes tinged his cheeks. He wasn't certain what little kids were ever thinking, and what if one of them shot a spitball or snot-rocket at him? The thought was mortifying to the point he fantasized about running out of the room briefly.
He was snapped back to attention by a murmur of "oooohs" and childish exclamations. Diva, never failing to seize the opportunity to show off, was balancing on the tip of her nose on the desk in front of him suddenly. Under some circumstances he'd be embarrassed by his partner's antics, but the crowd was perfect right now.
"And this is my friend Diva." He said, motioning to the performing Popplio. She flipped over, landing on the desk with a thud and a joyous yip.
(Thank you, thank you. Don't hold the applause dears.) The Popplio cried. Given that normal humans lacked the ability to understand Pokemon language, the room just heard her excited barking.
"Diva's a Popplio. They're Sea-Lion Pokemon primarily found around the Alola Region and other tropical islands." Darcy said, petting her head softly. "I've never been to Alola, but Diva's egg was a gift to me from an Alolan friend." A far-off look entered his eye as he thought of how he'd acquired the little seal.
One of the children, a little girl, shot their hand in the air and asked before Darcy could even call on her. "Was it your GIRLFRIEND?" The class erupted into giggles at the thought of grown ups dating, and Darcy laughed lightly even as his face began approaching the coloration of a Cherubi.
"S-something like that." He answered, before clearing his throat. "Now, Popplio's family line are known for their wonderful performances. Diva's a great example of this proclivity." The popplio, hearing her name and wonderful in the same breath, basked in the attention with the practiced ease of a starlet. Some of the children seemed confused at Darcy's choice of words though. "Proclivity means talent, or habit I guess. Just something you do because it's natural to do, y'know?" Darcy said, mentally noting to dumb down some of his language around the kids, who nodded sagely.
"You mean like Gerald and eating boogers?!?" One of the kids in the back shouted, which got the lot riled up again.
"Hey now!" Darcy said, looking stern all of a sudden. "Picking on other people isn't nice, and Diva here really doesn't like it either, do you?" Darcy asked. The Popplio chirped an affirmation, and the little boy sulked slightly. They weren't kindergartners anymore, so sooner or later someone was going to need to reinforce the rule of nice.
"Being nice to each other is pretty common sense." Darcy said, using the opportunity to broach a different subject, "and that goes double for being nice to your Pokemon whenever you become trainers." He pulled a small brush out of his bag, bringing it down the length of his Popplio's back. "There are so many wonderful things about being friends with Pokemon that you'll never learn unless you gain their friendship and trust. Some Pokemon won't even evolve unless you really develop a powerful bond with them." The Popplio was preening under his attention.
"Like who?" One of the boys cried.
"Well, a lot of baby Pokemon like Cleffa need to trust you to evolve. Or there's Eevee. You can evolve it three different ways depending on your friendship with it."
"Are you gonna train a Pokemon like that?"
"Hopefully, yeah. There's a lot of cool Pokemon like that." Darcy said with a smile. The Popplio bristled slightly. "Though Diva here's the best."
Mollified, the Popplio settled back down.
"Speaking of which," Darcy picked up a large inflatable Pokeball from the floor before tossing it to Diva, who balanced it on her nose, "why don't we play a bit?"
After about twenty minutes of playing with the children, they were called to recess and begged Diva to come with them. Darcy gave them a small smile before nodding, the sea-lion pup being escorted out like a pampered princess while she bounced the ball from her nose to the children's hands. The teacher came over, and Darcy tucked his hand behind his head with a small sigh. "Sorry about that. I guess I didn't too good of a job, did I?"
"Nonsense Darcy!" The teacher said with a small laugh, "There's always hiccups leading a class with kids this age, but I really appreciate everything you did for us today." She offered him a handshake, which he gladly accepted. "So many of the kids think that being Pokemon trainers just means catching and training the strong Pokemon without thinking about what it means to have a Pokemon."
"Yeah," the young man agreed, staring out the window at the playground, "it's a big responsibility. Suddenly you're a kid and accountable for not only yourself, but also for these wonderful friends we call Pokemon. I'm kind of glad I spent so many years volunteering at the Day-Care. I'm not sure I could've handled the responsibility when I was younger....Sometimes I don't even know if I can now."
Diva was leading the kids in what appeared to be a game of dodge ball with the inflatable Pokeball, and the sea-lion pup was doing far better than the squealing kids. Funny how a water jet could so easily stop a ball. Darcy just chuckled before turning to the door to head out and join the fun.
