PERSONALITY
Starling is a very focused and driven person. They know what they want, and they will allow nothing to distract them from reaching that goal. In their case, right now, it happens to be researching into the melding of human and pokemon. Naturally, it was worth associating with Team Crux as their interests were also aligned with Starling's. They are nothing if not pragmatic, after all.
That's not to say that they don't have morals. Starling is generally respectful of the law and of ethical concerns. But Starling is quite aware of Team Crux's reputation, and of what they do to deserve it. They just turn a blind eye towards it and tolerate it because Team Crux is still useful. Hypocritical? Perhaps. But they don't quite care.
They are very protective of their starter pokemon, not only because they believe it to be the spirit of their twin brother. They would also show the same protectiveness and possessiveness to all of their pokemon, and anyone that they are close to, but their single-mindedness with regards to their research hasn't left Starling with many opportunities to make friends. Get yourself in their circle, though, and you will have a friend for life who will stop at nothing to see you--and themself--succeed.
BACKGROUND
Born on Antila Island, Starling enjoyed a carefree childhood along with their twin brother Lucian. Unfortunately, shortly after they turned 11, instead of setting out on a Pokemon journey, Lucian died in a tragic accident as the pair were playing in the jungle nearby town. Starling has never gotten over accident. A short while after, they found themself encountered a lost little Phantump near the site of the accident. With all the superstition surrounding Phantump, Starling became convinced that it was the spirit of their little brother, born again in the form of a pokemon. Whether it is true or not, who can say?
Since then, they have become obsessed with finding a way to bring him back, in at least a semi-human form. They left Antares City for Cyngi, seeking out the best schools and universities where they could conduct their research. Filled with a drive that many other students did not possess, Starling ended up graduating early and started their postgraduate studies with a clear goal in mind. During this time, it was only natural that they would cross paths with Team Crux, considering the nature of their research. If they would continue their work and offer breakthroughs to the group, along with doing some other little tasks for them, then they'd provide Starling with the funding they needed to continue their research. Too focused on their goal to really care about where the money was coming from, Starling agreed, and that was the start of their entanglement with Team Crux.

A yipping Lillipup would send him running and ducking to hide behind Starling's knees. However, he can pull himself together if people and pokemon that he cares about are in danger. He may not be able to do much! But he'll try. Outside of battles, he likes to make himself useful. He'll pick up things that people have accidentally dropped, he'll help with reorganizing small belongings to make them look neat--generally, small little tasks that could make someone's life easier.
