Avery is, to put it bluntly, lazy and irresponsible. Sure, he'll do his gym battles, but he does them because he A) Needs to be bribed by his parents and Finds the battles to be fun sometimes. Most of the time though he would rather relax and go bird watching. He used to not be very adept at it, thinking everything was a bird(hence his Charmanders name) But nowadays he, despite his young age, the regions foremost expert on flying type Pokemon. His knowledge of birds has been compared to that of Bugsy's knowledge on bug Pokemon in passing.

Besides bird watching, and researching birds and Flying-type Pokemon, he likes to play with Birdie. The little Charmander seems to be the only thing to give him the energy to run around all the time. Reading is a fun pastime of his, whether or not it involves birds. Basically, he's a huge nerd.

He's a Pokemon conservation activist, making sure that there are plenty of places rare and almost extinct Pokemon can go for protection from poachers. He hopes to, one day, befriend the Legendary Bird Pokemon Ho-oH, as from texts he's read on it, it would be the ultimate bird watcher bird to watch.


Avery was born into the Soar family, the family that has run the Lacaille City Gym since before he was born. So, as their first and only child, he was to inherit the gym from his mother. Their family was quite wealthy too, having earned money from both winning battles in the gym and selling tickets for people to watch. This being said, he grew up with little to no struggle. He didn't need to do anything or need to go to a public school, so he was able to stay at home with a private tutor, resulting in an accelerated learning curve for him.

When he turned 8 he took up the hobby of bird watching, as his uncle gave him a pair of Binoculars. His next gift(also his last one) was a Charmander. Still being amped up on the bird-watching buzz, he named it Birdie. For the next year, he and his Charmander would call everything a bird. Eventually, he began to actually look into bird Pokemon and learned about how varying the flying type actually was.

After years of studying, he began to mellow out a lot more to the point of him being seen as, and quite frankly is, lazy. On his thirteenth birthday, he was told that it was now his turn to become the Gym Leader. He was less than enthused about this, but he really didn't have much of a choice. Since then, he has taken challenger's and researched flying type Pokemon, to the point where he is seen by many(and by many I mean people in the city) as one of the hardest gym leaders to defeat.

PERSONALITY — Birdie is friendly and happy like, all the time. However, he is also highly competetive and will try and fight anyone he can to test his strength, though he does it with a smile on his face. He doesn't like losing but will do so with a smile on his face. He tends to bite off more then he can chew all the time, and has next to no patience to just sit around and always tries to take life by the horns. The little Charmander takes pride in his large tail flame, despite the fact that not only is he small, but due to the proportions, so is the tail flame.
