ABNORMALITIES — Her hands and forearms often have bandaging on them, with little scars from Pokemon scratches she’s gotten from the past.
Ultimately being stuck indoors for a majority of her childhood, Maris had a straight, short build, often complimented with the fact that she often wears oversized sweaters and hoodies now that she lives with her brother, Fen. Her hands and forearms often got cut (both from Pokemon scratches and paper cuts) and bruised from having to deal with him and his Pokemon's antics, having read on Pokemon behavior while her brother hadn't bothered despite very well knowing about her parents' issues with them, and she still finds herself bandaging her hands, as Fen’s antics never changed--if not, he’s gotten rowdier. To welcome her newfound sense of freedom in Stellara, she's abandoned the dresses she'd been encouraged to wear (see ref image below) and instead dons fleecy hoodies and sweaters over dress shirts, coupled with a navy skort and tennis sneakers.
PERSONALITY
Many friends and family members distant and close to the Ansel family would easily say that Maris is a placid, aloof bookworm of a kid, which is only partially true. She has somewhat of a resting bitch face and isn’t much of a talker; the bookworm part is true as well, which could have contributed to her slight social ineptitude having dealt with books and Pokemon more than people, but only since, as Maris would say, “she had jackshit to do.” This is where the truth to the assumptions end. In fact, some could say she took from her brother some, in terms of being brazen in attitude and choice of words, her stubbornness and being unintentionally foulmouthed, but Maris manages to differ from her brother besides that.
For one, she’s quite absent-minded and laid-back in contrast to her brother’s fiery and goal-oriented attitude. Maris finds it hard for herself to get easily riled up by others and rarely takes things to heart, nor would she say she has any “dream” or “life-goal” she wants to work to. She lives in the present, so to speak. She likes taking things easy and observing at her own pace with whatever she decides to do or finds interesting. Planning in the long term is not so doable for someone who gets easily bored like Maris, either. As a result, she has a bit of a wanderlust, which coupled with her curiosity and general lack of self-preservation or restraint, can get her into trouble, unintentional or not.
Whatever manages to especially snag her attention and interest is not to be dropped, though. When Maris actually gets a personal (usually short-term) goal set up for herself, she won’t stop until she’s done and satisfied. Her best would be put into whatever she set herself to do--including battles. Even if something else objectively more important comes up, even if it ends up developing to pose a threat (physical or not) to her, she won’t feel right abandoning it. Hell, even if she’s forced to switch priorities, her submission will only be temporary, rest assured, and she’ll waste little to no time to get back on course. Carefree yet stubborn with a lack of self-care is not a good mix for someone like Maris.
As for how she treats people, it’s...odd. While she herself is not very social, which is evident in her lack of a verbal filter and often talking in fragments, she still finds herself fascinated by people, in an odd sense. Reading countless of books, fictitious and not, on stuff like region lore, myths and counts of adventurers has gotten her interested in history, both ancient and contemporary, to the point where she’ll venture out to different towns just to see how the people live there or spectate a battle to see how their regime is. Unfortunately this also extends to...well, the equivalent of being a person who sees a car crash or train wreck and just keeps watching in fascination. What I’m trying to say is she’s quite aloof but observant with a small voyeuristic streak. (THE OTHER DEFINITION, I MEAN THE OTHER.)
Meanwhile, while she is still as observant of Pokemon as she is with people, Maris finds herself having an easier time conversing with Pokemon compared to her experience with people. With the research in the library and experience she’s had dealing with Fen and his rowdy team, she’s more warm and easy-going when talking to Pokemon, almost to the point of treating them with the same kind of respect human beings would get. (Perhaps even more so with her lack of experience with people.) She treats Pokemon with more outright kindness and concern just as one would to a good friend of theirs. Just as she would throw away self-preservation in the name of exploration, she would throw it away for the safety of her Pokemon.
BACKGROUND
Denoted from her given name, she was born to a tug operator and marine biologist, raised in Canalave City for a majority of her life. Aside from the occasional seaside vacation the family took, the two parents were often swamped with work, with her mother active in her maritime research with water-type Pokemon at her side to her father working hard with ships--close to home, but busy nonetheless. While this, plus her older brother’s shenanigans, made her more familiar with Pokemon early on in her childhood, this made Maris not exactly able to go out much with friends due to their overprotective, coddling attitudes conflicting with their busy schedules. To compensate, she spent a majority of her childhood at the Canalave Library, indulging in all sorts of literature, including myths, legends, books about Pokemon and biographies of great trainers to make up for her lack of social interaction. This still didn't do much to satisfy her--it was a wholesome pastime and it kept her busy, at least, but her cloistered childhood would prove to develop into a longing sense of discovery and exploration come her arrival to Stellara.
Her older brother by 5 years, Fen Ansel, was a developing battleholic of a Pokemon trainer as he grew up cosseting Maris as her parents did. In contrast to Maris, he was a rowdy, outgoing trainer who treated his Pokemon as if they were his best friends, and he wasn’t afraid to get rough with his training regime. With an aggressive regime came broken vases, bruises and more, however. Maris found this as an opportunity to use her newly-gained knowledge on Pokemon through her reading to help Fen pacify his Pokemon to both lessen the amount of bruises and broken furniture around the house. Such hands-on experience left her with lots of scratches on her hands and forearms with each lesson, though, much to the hyperbolic worry of her parents and teasing of her brother. Nevertheless, she found herself more versed in conversing and caring for Pokemon at a mere 11 years old as a result.
Her preference for Pokemon over people also came from the befriending of a wild Rotom that tagged along with Fen as he returned home from a trip to Eterna Forest, where he decided to briefly rummage through the Old Chateau before ultimately chickening out early. The eccentric ghost liked to meddle with both the various appliances they had around the house and Fen’s fiesty Pokemon. The Rotom continued to meddle around the house much to the confusion and annoyance of the rest of the family until Maris decided to start talking to the Ghost-type as it flashed her TV on and off late one night. She was the first to discover the Rotom’s presence and welcomed it with not annoyance or shock, but with...well, friendliness and curiosity. It was the first time she’d really seen a Pokemon like it, after all. Confused and heavily startled, the Rotom hurriedly disappeared and hid away. From that night on, Maris decided to keep its presence a secret, keeping any conversation she decided to start up between her and the Ghost-type to herself. She asked things like where it came from, if it had friends, how funny Fen is...things like that. The Rotom took a while to warm up to her and slowly began to (albeit shyly) pop into her room more and more through her TV, her clock, her electric fan, etc. Eventually, this grew into an outright friendship. Rotom was never given a name at the time, but it very frequently dropped by Maris’s room to play around and talk with her as if they were good friends. Er, well, they really WERE at that point.
When Fen had turned 19, he had already gotten all 8 Sinnoh Gym badges and proven himself to be a great trainer capable of taking on the Pokemon League. Despite this, he felt dissatisfied with his progress, as he felt like he could do more than he had already--he could accomplish a greater challenge. Thus, the moment Fen discovered Stellara and heard of its notoriously difficult Pokemon League, he wasted no time in packing to set for Eridani City. However, he knew his coddling parents wouldn’t easily let him go, as it took them great effort to allow him to set on his journey around Sinnoh to get 8 badges. (And even then, he frequently visited through flying there with his Staraptor!) So he kept it a secret--and invited Maris to go with him.
“Think of it,” he’d said. “No more staying home until you’re my age and waiting to go outside--you’re good with Pokemon anyway, aren’t you? And you’re sick of sitting around, aren’t you?? An entire region is calling your name--and mine, of course, b-but--come with me! Don’t leave your bro behind!”
How could Maris argue against such a Totally Convincing Proposition? She began packing in secret not long afterward, eager to step foot in a new region. Throughout this period of packing, Rotom worriedly buzzed around her room. ( "You’re leavin’ me behind?!” ) it cried. ( “N-no! How could you?! How cruel! Inzzane! How could you do thizz?!” )
The girl chuckled as she turned to the Ghost-type. “Nooo, I’m not, relax. That’s dumb. And a dick move. That’d be a dumb, dick move, is what I’m saying.” She smiled at the Pokemon and she walked over to the electric fan sitting at her nightstand, her left fist closed behind her back. Rotom looked at her confusedly. “Y’know, I really wanna pack this. But...uh. I don’t think it’ll fit in luggage…” She held the fan and shook it back and forth a little, raising her left arm to reveal a Pokeball within her hand.
“You wanna take care of it?”

PERSONALITY —
The origin of Fran’s given name was from two things in particular: one, they were a fan. Two, Fran was quite frantic, simply put. Before their encounter with Fen and Maris, they were much more mischievous, freely taking pleasure in pranking any wandering Pokemon and trainers who stepped into the Old Chateau. They believed they were as bold and tricky as can be, before discovering via their meeting with Maris that their devilish veneer easily fell flat when caught off guard. Fran’s bold, cheeky attitude is prone to fall apart due to being easily startled and quite anxious after being surprised. All bark and scarce bite, as both Fran and Maris discovered for themselves. They care greatly of their pride and the confident facade they so desperately wish to keep, but unfortunately, Fran is very finicky and faint-hearted without the proper motivation and assurance. Luckily for them, Maris is very ready to give it.
