Money for Nothing That wasn't a response Miyoko was entirely expecting, and it was one that earned a little more than just a quirked eyebrow from her in return. "Just her"? What was that supposed to mean? An interesting... what was the word? Demarcation? Delineation? No... ah, that was it. Distinction was the word she'd been looking for. Still, it was something worth a bit of thought. Only her? What made her any different from the other passersby that bothered to talk to him? Or was that just it, that no one else did? Not exactly a pleasant line of thought to go down but it was one that made a fair amount of sense if his family was dragging him places and he wanted to be left alone. Well, so much for that. Not like she really ever cared much about what other people wanted, anyways - they never seemed to care much about what she wanted in return. "... rrriiight. Oddly enough that doesn't surprise me at all." Miyoko continued, eyes dropping to his arms as Arthur shook his hands out as if they were limp. It was enough to earn another skeptical look from the trainer, at least. Again, forced into the job or no- actually, that gave her even more reason to be suspicious. Plenty of people asked for the post of Gym Leader, but rare was the individual that the League sought out themselves. And back to the other Gym Leaders.... she'd grown up in Kanto and Johto, and the talents of Sabrina and other psychics like her were very well known there. Didn't seem to be as prominent her in Stellara, but at the same time Miyoko would place her money on Arthur being one as well if such trends were followed here. Maybe not to the same degree as the fabled Leaders in other regions, but Psychic specialists had a rather alarming tendency to harbor at least some sort of latent talent compared to trainers focusing on other types. "So, then- ah, right. Rocky?" Miyoko started, pausing mid sentence to give a pointed look back to the Heracross beside Arthur - and while he would blankly stare back for a moment too long, Rocky eventually picked up on the message and let the Leader's arm go as his trainer turned her attention back to the booths. Plenty of them with a focus on throwing games to choose from. Too many, actually. With more than half of them basically the same stall only with a variation on rules and odds it was difficult to figure out which to pick from in a way that would keep the challenge going fresh. "Well, if it's fine by you.... why don't you take the first pick?" The trainer continued, glancing back over her shoulder at the Gym Leader. First rule of anything competitive - know who you were playing. Second rule? Know their comfort zone and how to break it.

MAYBE IT'D BE FASTER IF THE ONE WHO DISAPPEARED WAS ME. Arthur had always been on the weaker side when it came to health. His psychic abilities did nothing to improve his strength, and frankly it was easier for him to get scrapes and keel over something exhausting compared to the average person. In a way, it contributed more to his rather spoiled attitude, since he needed to depend on other people to help him with more exerting activities. He could still throw a Poke Ball decently, sure, but...well, you get the idea. He wondered exactly what this girl wanted to achieve by bugging him. Wouldn't it be easier for them to leave him alone? But at the same time, he had found himself passive to the whole situation. He mainly did not feel like interacting with his family, but with an acquaintance, he supposed that was okay, especially since they've battled before. Arthur felt a sort of solace with those he had met on the field. Was it perhaps because they were like minded to a certain extent? He was happy to finally be released by the hulking Heracross. It did take a while though for the bug type to get the message. And then Miyoko asked him to pick a stall. Alright, looks like the games were finally starting. The gym leader glanced around the stalls, mulling over which one would be a good one to try. He wanted to make sure that whichever stall they picked, it would the kind that gave at least a number of chances per payment. That way, he would be able to experiment and gauge with the first one or two shots before cheating with the third. Letting out a small hum, he set his eyes on a quaint wooden stall that involved throwing rings into the bottles lined up in rows. That looked decent enough, he supposed. He gestured at it, "Let's try that one."The stall owner seemed all too happy to get some customers since business was slow. Arthur decided to pay first to get the three rings. If he got to win, then Miyoko would simply pay him back. The guy manning the booth then told them the rules: just gotta land the rings on the bottles, each container having a different solid color. The colors determined how many points one could get, and if he managed to get the center one, it was worth a lot of points. Arthur eyed the huge stuffed toys sitting neatly on the furthest part of the stall. That sounded like a good prize to reach for. "Ladies first?" he said while handing her the three rings.

Money for Nothing If nothing else it seemed like Arthur wasn't going to make this easy, and while Miyoko was always happy to answer a challenge... something also told her that he was probably playing at the same game she was. Much of the point behind allowing him to pick a stall was in the hopes that he'd take the first shot and give her an idea of what she was dealing with. That didn't happen. He picked a place, yes, a small wooden one that didn't seem to be getting much business but it didn't take too long to figure out why. While it didn't go for everyone present at the gala a fair chunk of the visiting population were trainers, and it took an act of will to keep her expression from changing as Miyoko followed Arthur to the stall in question only to see rings. Not balls, but rings. Not something she nor most other trainers were going to be all that used to throwing, and the thing about such actions was that muscle memory was a bitch. Even without trying most people would be trying to throw those like they were orbs of some sort, which meant retraining the brain to calculate a whole new action. Alright, well played. Miyoko thought, reaching out to pick up and heft one of the rings as Arthur payed the man running the stall, testing its weight. Not heavy at all, which was a bit of the problem. Cheap plastic, the kind where it would be very easy to overestimate and throw it too hard, sending it clear past the targets. At the same time, though, light enough that it'd be just as bad as momentum wasn't going to carry them all too far with too weak a throw - the air itself would stop them dead. Add on top of that the fact that you had to work with gravity and get the objects to fall onto your intended target as simply hitting it with the rings would either knock the bottles over or cause the ring itself to just bounce off.... Clever boy. Knew how to pick his battles, at least. "Yeah, yeah..." Miyoko muttered, not at all surprised at stall owner's invitation for her to go first - if one wanted to call it that. At this point it felt more like the Gym Leader calling her out even if it wasn't actually him saying the words, and she'd earned it to an extent by giving him the opportunity to pick which stall they went to in the first place. That, and the bet. "In for a Poké...." Miyoko started, straightening her stance and taking several long moments to judge the distance between where she was standing and the intended targets. Middle target was out of the question just given the rigged nature of most of these games. Entirely possible that the shop owner was of the upfront and honest sort, but Miyoko wasn't about to bet money on that with someone she'd never met before - so, assumption was that something was throwing odds off of that one. Miming out several test throws, Miyoko threw once and failed, the ring bouncing off the bottle but giving her an idea of what to expect, with the second ring landing with relative ease on the lower point bottle and the third ring landing comfortably around the mid tier points. Not as good as it could have been, but under the circumstances it was probably the best she could hope for without practice. "So this the part where you're going to tell me that we're playing with fair odds?" Miyoko started, stepping back and stretching her arms up to work a knot loose from her upper back. "Nah, not you." She continued, holding up a hand to silence the bewildered stall owner the moment his mouth opened to rebuke the statement, not realizing that Miyoko's comment had been directed at the other trainer as she settled her back to lean against the edge of the stall. The smirk, while a fair bit smaller, was still present as the raven haired woman watched him for any hint of reaction - and, more tellingly, the throws he was about to make.

MAYBE IT'D BE FASTER IF THE ONE WHO DISAPPEARED WAS ME. Honestly, whatever was going on in Miyoko's mind was honestly overestimating Arthur by a large margin. He had chosen the stall mostly out of randomness, and upon closer inspection there was a cute Munna plushie hanging on as one of the prizes that he didn't mind getting. Sure, he was originally thinking of winning something for his younger cousins to appease them or something, but that didn't mean he was against getting something for himself. It did not cross his mind that the rings would put a trainer at a disadvantage, but their lightness was a considerable plus in comparison to the other stalls that had bean-stuffed balls. This didn't make aiming them easier, but it sure put less strain on his ability, so once he got the feel of it, navigating the ring to hit its target should be a cinch. He watched Miyoko quietly and intently as she took to position. She looked very serious, which he supposed was to be expected since he remembered her to be very competitive. Honestly to him, he didn't mind winning or losing this particular match so long as he got the stuffed toys. After a couple of fake throws, the ring soon sailed from her fingers. Arthur had to resist the urge to snicker, though that was mostly his childishness at play. His mature side refused to make a remark, not wanting to turn the whole thing to his advantage too much. She was quick to adapt, however; the next few rings managed to sit comfortably in the bottles, albeit only giving her a rather low set of points. It was a decent score since this was their first time with this particular stall, which he was sure had its own quirks here and there. Each stall would certainly have their elements set up differently -- perhaps his bottles were closer together compared to others, or maybe the necks weren't very long, which made the game harder. Fair odds? Uh, sure. Well, not really. He picked up the rings from the stall owner and tried to sharpen his focus. It had been a while since he accurately synced his hands and his telekinesis to do a fake throw. Usually when he did it, he'd throw the object first and then guide it right after with his psychic abilities, usually coming in the form of a gentle push to guide the object to its intended destination. In this case, however, the area of success was much smaller, which meant that he needed to make sure his aim was accurate enough to warrant a little push here and there, otherwise it'd look painfully obvious. Another way to go about it was to use his psychic power and "throw" with that instead of his actual strength. He tried the first technique with ring one after a few fake throws to get a sense of it. The plastic circle flew cleanly through the air, catching itself in a middle tier bottle after a gentle nudge to the left. The thing was that he could feel that he had almost missed that shot--the ring almost tipped if he didn't push it a little. Thus, he tried the second technique with the second ring. It was a complete flop, missing its target almost entirely because he felt the ring was moving too slowly to be believable, so it ended up landing at one of the furthest bottle from the center. Well, at least that would net him a few amount of points. It was better than none at all. Alright, time for the real thing. Taking a deep breath, he made sure to aim for the center most bottle and did an unintentional Miracle Eye. His throw looked almost natural as the ring landed in the jackpot bottle. Needless to say, the stall owner was shocked, but was quick to say congratulations and even seemed a little bit relieved. "If people see that you won the jackpot, more people might try my stall!" he exclaimed before allowing Arthur to pick his prize. Of course, he got the Munna stuffed toy, but he was a little disappointed to hear that he could only get one prize. Oh well, maybe he could play in another stall later and get something for his cousins. He then turned to Miyoko with a cheeky grin, something he hadn't done in a long time. "Nope." he replied after moving closer to her, his voice soft enough so that the stall owner wouldn't hear. "I definitely cheated, so you don't need to pay for the game." the gym leader then proceeded to examine his prize more closely, squishing it and commenting on its cuteness. It took him some more moments to realise the creeping fatigue. Oh, maybe he put more effort than he had expected to that last throw.

Money for Nothing To be entirely honest Miyoko wasn't entirely sure how to interpret Arthur's lack of answer to her earlier question. The cynic in her told Miyoko that it meant exactly what went unchallenged, that he fully intended to cheat to win. Under different circumstances that might have been grounds for an immediate call out as the woman didn't really care what the reasons were behind such behavior, especially when it came to competitions. It was simply a line you didn't cross, especially when you weren't able to beat someone who worked their ass off to get to that point. It meant that they'd earned that win. And had this mattered at all it probably would've been legitimate grounds to throw a punch at the offending party's face. But it was a carnival game and it didn't. More to the point, if it meant what Miyoko thought it did it was worth a chance to see what a psychic could actually do, assuming he was one. She'd grown up hearing of the stories and rumors but never had a chance to actually see a performance - for lack of a better word - from one, and that was worth a few Poké any day of the week, the same she'd offer street performers if given the chance. Not that it would've really been worth it. It was hard to tell but aside from looking a bit off there was nothing all that definitive about Arthur's attempts that would've given them away. Hell, even knowing what to look for still left it difficult, and had the third attempt not landed on the top tier target Miyoko would've been inclined to say he was either a shitty psychic or a normal person to begin with. Even that aside, though, it was a relatively mundane and ultimately disappointing performance overall, nothing a gentle gust of wind couldn't do completely by accident. Maybe that'd been the point, but... eyebrows raised in perplexity and frowning slightly, Miyoko began moving forward to pay up her end of the bet before Arthur stepped back from the stall, prize in hand, and spoke with his voice low enough to avoid being overheard by the shopkeep. "... points for honesty, at least. Maybe a three out of ten at best for performance." Miyoko replied, Rocky catching onto the fact that things were being muttered and shuffling in to the point that he'd gotten awkwardly close to both humans in an attempt to hear. Not wanting it to be overly obvious to the guy that Arthur had just swindled, the woman would gently nudge the Bug back to create some distance, Rocky looking down at the limb as if confused. "So, what now? Obviously not gonna beat you at anything like this and you nabbed a prize. Gonna go back to hiding?" Miyoko continued, stepping back and eyes still locked onto the Leader.

MAYBE IT'D BE FASTER IF THE ONE WHO DISAPPEARED WAS ME. Arthur shrugged. It wasn't like he was aiming to impress her. In fact it was the very opposite. He needed to be subtle so that he wouldn't get caught, otherwise the whole cheating thing wouldn't work. "Hey, I got a squishy plushie, so I'd take the three out of ten." he replied with a grin. The gym leader supposed it would be better to get some distance from the stall now, otherwise it was going to be painfully obvious and he wasn't in the mood to fight for his fake Munna. The carnival continued on as usual, not realising that anything went amiss. Arthur was now cradling the soft stuffed toy in his arms as he let out a hum in thought. "Well, if you really want to know the extent of my ability, I suppose we could move to someplace where there are no people." he answered, "I feel terrible for disappointing you. Surely you want to see something more interesting than a sleight of hand, hm?"He half wondered where his Pokemon and cousins were at the moment. Surely they must be somewhere in the Gala, but he had no idea where they'd be. Arthur didn't want to admit it, but with Miyoko around, he realised how lonely he was and at the same time how much he craved some semblance of company. Sure, he already thought of that to himself when he saw Rocky the Heracross, but it was a reaffirmation after this whole...whatever this thing was. Not a date, surely. A chance meeting of acquaintances, he supposed. "I'm not very familiar with the lay of the land, though. Do you have a place to recommend?" He wanted to make sure that there was absolutely no one there, for starters. He wasn't sure why he wanted to show off his ability to this person when he had wanted to keep it hidden so long. Or maybe that was precisely the point. He had really only shown it to one other person in his life, and even then that was when everything was new to him. He didn't know his limitations nor the possibilities. He hadn't gone through those rigorous weeks where he studied how far he could use telekinesis until he collapsed. Now he was wiser, and now...well, he wanted to show someone his work. In this case, it would have to be her.

Money for Nothing Miyoko frankly just found herself mirroring Arthur's shrug as the Gym Leader responded to her earlier comment - really, that's all it had been. She wasn't exactly one to go out of her way to seek the approval of others so it didn't exactly come as a surprise that Arthur's outlook on her joking appraisal was much the same. Considering that he'd actually managed to nab something out of the deal for himself... her opinion would've probably been much the same in his shoes. It did leave Miyoko wondering as to his plans for the plushie, though. Arthur didn't really come off as the type to enjoy such things himself, so what was going to happen to the thing? Sell it? Give it to another kid? One of his Pokemon? Or just leave it idling in a corner and gathering dust? It was little more than idle curiosity at best but enough to occupy her thoughts as Arthur not so subtly began to steer the conversation away from the street side stall, but it had enough of her attention that the Gym Leader's next comment did manage to catch Miyoko rather off guard. ".... eh?" Perhaps not the most eloquent of responses, but during the second or two that Miyo's mind took to process what had been said her expression of blank surprise managed to inadvertently mirror several of Rocky's up to that point - the Heracross in question continuing past them for several feet before realizing his trainer had stopped, looking back in confusion. He... hadn't taken the jabs and jibes seriously, had he? It occurred to Miyoko that no one really knew her anymore and while that had never bothered the trainer in the slightest... the fact that she acted as though they did probably meant a few misunderstandings were likely to pop up. Again, not that she ever particularly cared since most of the time she was never going to see people again after that initial meeting but that wasn't the case here. She fully intended to challenge Arthur again once her team had beefed itself up a bit and the last thing Miyoko wanted was bad blood between herself and another trainer who'd actually earned some modicum of respect. Definitely a tiny revelation to keep in mind moving forward, then. But as for the here and now, and considering that he wasn't offended... if anything, far from it going off his tone of voice and words... "Hey, if you're in the mood for a demonstration. Never actually seen someone use those skills before but heard plenty about 'em from trainers who've been to Saffron and the like." Miyoko replied, picking up as if she hadn't missed a beat. He did bring up a bit of a point about the "no people" thing, though. Such places weren't exactly easy to come by in a city, all the more so when there was a major event like the Gala taking place. There were even places out of the immediate city limits for events and Pokemon that didn't deal well with the urban environment so it wasn't exactly like those were an option, either. That did bring up another thing that the young woman had to wonder about given both her earlier thoughts and his position as the Psychic Gym Leader, though. "Nothing off the top of my head, no. I just stopped by Vega for a break, been all over the place but I don't really know any one location like the locals would. Gotta ask, though. You seem awfully keen to keep your unique skills hidden. Why do you care? Plenty of trainers out there with latent ability and if anything it almost seems to be a requirement that any Gym Leader of the type have some skill if the other regions are anything to go by." Miyoko responded, hands locking behind her head and back arching to stretch out a knotted muscle between her shoulder blades - all the while keeping an eye on Arthur to gauge his reaction to the question.
