BLAIRE BECKENBAUER
NAME — Blaire Beckenbauer
AGE — Twenty-eight years of age – born February 13th
GENDER — Male
SEXUALITY — Homosexual -- greyromantic
TRAINER CLASSES — Tactician – Researcher -- Psychic
AFFILIATION — Unaffiliated
OCCUPATION — Paranormal Researcher
APPEARANCE
HEIGHT — 6’6”
WEIGHT — 157 pounds – slightly under recommended weight for his height, judging by most models
HAIR COLOR — Black
EYE COLOR — Golden amber
SKIN COLOR — Medium – a darker brown
ABNORMALITIES — Blaire has a couple of scars, but none seem to stand out too much (nor do they have exciting stories, to his great disdain) – a couple of marks that look as though they might be bite or claw marks adorn his upper arms, and a pale, wide mark against the side of his torso is a reminder of a rather awkward incident involving too much alcohol and a slippery kitchen floor. He has a couple of piercings in both ears, but nothing too extravagant; he prefers silver jewelry when he can find it, even if gold tends to bring out his eyes.
Though he’d prefer not to, Blaire tends to stick out in a crowd – being 6’6” tends to make you tower above most people, after all. Despite his impressive height, there’s a scrawny gauntness to the man that suggests he’s a little underfed; he could probably stand to eat more than one meal a day. Dark shadows underneath his eyes suggest that he isn’t exactly sleeping well, either; Blaire could stand to take a few extra hours to catch up on self-care.
Aside from looking tired, scrawny, and a little ill, he’s surprisingly well-kept. The clothing he chooses tends more towards the formal side, and there’s never an ill-adjusted shirt collar or an untucked dress shirt in sight. His mess of black hair is always styled and contained in a semi-neat ponytail; it’s quite hard to completely tame it, but he does his best to keep it consistent and presentable without wasting too much of the day on it.
He moves with quiet, calculated purpose, and, though there’s never a smile or any pleasant expression on his face, his eyes are always watching. Seeing anything but the faint, near-constant frown or grimace on his face is a rarity – seeing him express something other than a melancholy sort of ‘meh’ attitude around other people is an event that should be marked on a calendar. Despite his best attempts, being forced into social situations that he wants no part of make it more likely for him to make blunders, and his demeanor tends to shift from an ice-cold ‘i hate everything and everyone, so they’d better stay away’ to a clumsier, more anxious sort of behavior. In these situations, he’s seen keeping to himself the best he can, making as little small talk as humanly possible.
PERSONALITY
stable. If Blaire prides himself on anything, it’s his stability. Others might call him “boring” or “rigid” for his lack of affect, but he views his constant, near-melancholy state as a personal victory, rather than a shortcoming. For better or for worse, he rarely has a powerful reaction to anything. Everything that he feels is internalized and rarely allowed to see the light of day. Personal control and stability is one of his strongest features, and he’s able to keep a calm, rational mind in even the most stressful situations as a result. He might be screaming on the inside, of course, but at least no one else knows that.
analytical. Everything in life is a puzzle just waiting to be solved, in Blaire’s professional opinion. He approaches any problem in life in as strategic a way as he can manage – even problems that could be solved in much simpler ways. Exercising his mind and keeping it sharp is one of the few pastimes he enjoys. He may overthink it at times, but Blaire’s analytical, logical approach to problems both big or small has helped solve most problems in the past. Emotional and social problems are another story, of course.
opportunistic. If you see a good opportunity, take it – it was seem cold-hearted or selfish, but Blaire will jump on a chance if he spots one. He’ll analyze the pros and cons of the idea first, of course – while he’s opportunistic, he’s certainly not reckless – but, if the pros outweight the cons, he’ll commit to an idea, even if it might not be the best for someone else. His lack of empathy doesn’t do him many favors in this department, but it has allowed him to advance and grow in professional fields, and the rewards from that are tempting enough to continue the selfish, self-serving streak.
knowledge-hungry. Some people seek power or popularity. Instead of that, Blaire almost religiously seeks knowledge. As a child, he was the one that read every book in the library, and, as he matured, the hunger for knowledge only grew. Research is a field that suits him remarkably well; there’s always something new to be discovered, and the desire to be the one doing the discovering is, perhaps, the one true passion that drives Blaire. If he doesn’t know or understand something, he’ll pursue understanding to the fullest.
resolved. Once he commits to something, it’s hard to dissuade him from his decision. Confounding situations tend to paradoxically upset and enthuse him all at once. Not understanding something is always irritating, but, at the same time, the mental workout he gets is enough to keep him at it when more sane men would have given up.
apathetic. It’s hard for him to feel much – so much of his time is spent shoving his emotions inside of himself that, when they are allowed outside, it’s hard for him to understand and react appropriately. If he doesn’t fully understand his own emotions, he has absolutely no clue when it comes to the emotions of others. He lacks empathy, and getting him to sympathize with you is nearly impossible.
self-loathing. Despite achieving so much and arguably being quite successful in his career, he isn’t very fond of himself. He’s critical of everything and anyone, but his biggest critiques are with himself. He’ll obsess and beat himself up over minor mistakes other people may not have even noticed, and most things concerning himself are approached with a pessimistic sort of tone. He hates other people, but he also loathes himself, perhaps to an even fuller extent.
socially awkward. He does his best to avoid social interaction, as though words could infect you with the plague. On the rare occasion that he does have to interact face-to-face with another human being for longer than ten seconds, he goes from a smooth intellectual to a bumbling, stumbling-over-words laughingstock.
isolated. He avoids people of his own volition, and claims to be introverted, but there’s still a loneliness there that, coupled with his self-loathing, leads to him feeling rather isolated from the world. He doesn’t feel as though he’d be interesting or noteworthy enough to keep friends even if he tried to make them, and doubts anyone would give him the time of day anyways. He, by no means, wants to make a horde of friends, but having one or two people to confide in now and again – especially on his worst days – would be helpful, and it’s hard for him to cope on his own.
over-controlling. When things don’t always go as he plans, he can become easily stressed – even if he sucks at expressing or dealing with that stress once it’s there. He’s so used to being in control of things and being in charge of his own decisions that being forced to listen to others or otherwise losing control of a situation can be ridiculously troubling for him.
BACKGROUND
Even when he was young, some part of him was always aware that he was different. Unfortunately for Blaire, being different when you’re still a kid is pretty tough – children don’t care much for subtlety, and certainly aren’t above teasing anybody that stands out. Even before he discovered his inherent abilities, he was the result of teasing not for any of his own shortcomings, but for his parents’ professions – they were a pair of morticians. Blaire was brought up and taught how the family business worked and why it was such an important job, but his schoolmates who lacked that particular education only saw it as a creepy, gross job, and they applied that stigma to Blaire as well. Even while young, he was ostracized, and he learned very quickly that things such as books were far more constant – and less cruel – than other people.
As a child, he was quite emotional, and prone to becoming quite upset and angry when he was on the receiving end of too many insults and attacks. Usually, he would be able to stomach the hurt and anger until safely away from others – in hindsight, the strange effects that seemed to occur in his room whenever he was upset probably should have caught his attention more. ‘Normal’ kids weren’t able to make their possessions fly off the shelf while perched on their bed all the way across the room. Things seemed to happen outside of his control more often than not, and, at the time, he was too unnerved and frightened to investigate just what was happening. Instead, he opted to ignore it, hoping that whatever strange phenomena were happening would leave if he paid them no mind.
He was already mocked for being a nerd and for having ‘creepy parents’, he didn’t need to add ‘unexplainable telekinetic abilities’ to the list.
One day, however, a school bully that cornered him against a locker pushed him too far. He was only ten or eleven at the time, and his stress and anxiety was already at an all-time high. As he was shoved into the locker, a vicious, powerful wish surged through his mind. For just a heartbeat, he wanted his antagonist to hurt just as badly as the people he antagonized. What happened next was a blur of chaos and pain, but he recalls pushing his attacker back without using any part of his body, and he recalls somehow, despite not understanding it at that time, inflicting a level of mental and emotional harm upon him.
It would have been a traumatic enough experience even if his flight response hadn’t kicked in; the next thing he remembered was suddenly being outside the school in the soccer field, with a headache that was worse pain than he’d ever imagined and a weak, trembling body. Despite having not been physically attacked, his nose was bloodied, and he felt worse than the times he’d been beaten up.
He couldn’t hide what had happened from his parents – terrified and upset, the bully had reported him to the principal’s office immediately, and Blaire’s parents had been called. At that time, he was terrified of accidentally harming them as well, and did his best to evade any help offered. Once he was calmed down, however, he had a long, difficult talk with them. They had very little idea what was going on, but they hated to see him in such a state, and they promised to help him try to figure out what was happening and how to deal with it.
At school, his situation became both better and worse simultaneously. He no longer had to worry about bullies coming to push and shove him around; in fact, no one, even the few people he’d called ‘friends’, seemed brave enough to approach him. Whispers of ‘freak’ and ‘weirdo’ were tossed around, and he felt wary, frightened eyes on him at all times. Even his teachers seemed somewhat unnerved by him. While he was grateful that he no longer had to worry about attacks, complete and total isolation was somehow far worse.
Research into Blaire’s strange condition directed them to man who, much like Blaire, had possessed psionic abilities since his birth. Though many who dismissed such things as poppycock and nonsense dismissed him as some sort of senile old man, Blaire’s unique situation was enough to make it sound feasible. The man had been an esteemed professor of subjects concerning the paranormal and strange before his retirement, and, upon hearing of Blaire’s predicament and the fear and lack of knowledge that surrounded it, he deigned to educate him. It was here that Blaire first learned that he wasn’t the only one capable of such things, and that in and of itself was a ridiculous relief.
Along with his school classes, he began twice-a-week lessons with the professor. He learned very quickly that the key to controlling his abilities came in controlling himself; if he allowed his emotions to control him, then his power was likely to burst forth whether he liked it or not. And, if he used his power too much, the physical consequences could be hazardous. More than once, while establishing his own limits, Blaire was stricken by migraines, nosebleeds, and a number of other, exhausting symptoms. In one case, he’d even passed out. The dangers of his abilities were to himself as well as others, if he wasn’t able to control them.
As he matured throughout the end of his school days, a marked change occurred in Blaire. Control of every aspect of his life became the primary focus for him, and he turned from an awkward, emotional child into an older, coldly calm teen who didn’t seem to care what the world threw his way. All of his energies went into perfecting his grades and honing abilities that were beginning to feel more like a boon than the curse he’d always dismissed them as. The whispers no longer concerned him, though many were unnerved by the person Blaire’d turned into. It wasn’t just being in control of his emotions; it was as though he’d shut down his emotional side completely.
He was accepted to a college with a full-ride scholarship, and, though he had to leave his mentor behind, he now felt comfortable enough with controlling and manipulating his own psychic energies to be on his own. The next years of his life were spent pursuing a degree, but they were also spent training his abilities even further and doing as much research into other, paranormal occurrences as possible. His mentor’s passion for the strange and occult stayed with Blaire, and, though his degree was in biology, most of his electives concerned stranger, less-scientific subjects.
It was in college that he developed a fondness for Pokemon – or, rather, three types of Pokemon in particular. His interest in Psychic-types was, perhaps, the most predictable, but he also took a vested interest in both Ghost- and Dark-types. Spirits and the dead had always been of interest to him due to his parents’ profession, but there was a lot of myth and legend surrounding Dark-types that seemed to call them supernatural monsters that brought bad luck and other misfortune to people.
When he got the chance, interacting hands-on with Pokemon was a refreshing change from his usual, monotonous coursework. He pushed the telepathy he’d worked with hesitantly towards Pokemon at first, but he realized quite quickly that the minds of Pokemon and the way they conversed with him there were much more interesting than the minds of most people. Pokemon didn’t think of him as weird or creepy – for the most part, at least – and he found himself developing a more comfortable relationship with them than others.
When he graduated, he found work as a researcher – work that had him moving around from region to region to study and examine various places famous for their odd histories or strange energies. From Lavender Town in Kanto to Ecruteak City in Johto, there were places all over that were curious to him. Along his travels, he happened upon a Pokemon of his own – or, rather, she happened upon him. He was never quite sure where the Fennekin had come from – mental questioning and prodding were responded to vaguely, but she seemed to think that, for better or for worse, this was where she was meant to be. Their relationship was rocky at first – she had a pride and dominant nature about her that made it hard for Blaire to keep control of a situation – but, eventually, they seemed to settle into a comfortable relationship. Zenzi was incapable of physical speech, but that suited Blaire just fine; he preferred telepathic conversations when he could get them, and he figured that conversing with the Fennekin in that way was a good way to open up her own mind to her innate Psychic-type abilities that much sooner.
Traveling with the fox gave him new purpose – she had her own goals and desires, and communicated them to Blaire frequently. Though no one, including herself, was sure if her voice loss was a result of physical or psychological trauma, she was fiercely determined to find a way to recover it. Blaire had very little idea of just how to do that himself, but the fox was full of ideas – most of them ridiculous or far-fetched, and many involving legendaries they had very little hope of meeting. But legendaries were of special interest to Blaire – the myth and legend surrounding them shadowed pretty much every other Pokemon’s – and, though he knew it was an unrealistic goal, he shifted his attention when he wasn’t researching to trying to track down any knowledge of legendaries and possible locations.
That research, along with rumors he’d heard about certain areas in the manor, directed him to Stellara; at the same time, the more rational side of him finally concluded that, if they were going to try to solve Zenzi’s issue, they would probably have to be strong. It likely wasn’t something they could do alone, either; Blaire had never aspired to be a Pokemon trainer himself, but he realized very quickly that becoming one was a logical solution to the problems that might pop up. And, as an added bonus, capturing Pokemon he was interested in would allow him to do more thorough research upon them.

HEIGHT — 1’06” – slightly taller than average
WEIGHT — 21 lbs

PERSONALITY —
Scars upon this Fennekin’s throat from an incident in her kithood that she refuses to talk about robbed her of her voice – though no one was sure whether actual physical damage, or the psychological trauma that resulted from it, were the actual cause for her voice loss. Despite being mute, Zenzi’s a proud, expressive fox; if she can’t get your attention normally, she isn’t above nipping your ankles or setting something you own ablaze. Much like Blaire, she prides herself on being in control of herself – so much so that she prefers to make her own strategies and plans. Even if Blaire offers solid advice, she’ll almost certainly avoid following it if she can come up with a different strategy.
She’s quite determined and passionate, and too stubborn to give up on much of anything. Though she tries not to show it, being incapable of speech causes her a lot of self-doubt and anxiety, and her main goal is to find a way to restore her voice, even if the only ideas she has about doing so are far-fetched and incredibly dangerous. She’s more than willing to put others at risk with her ideas, however; even if their team grows, she has little moral issue with using Blaire or another teammate if it benefits her in the end. She might not be overly friendly or affectionate, and she might be more irritating than endearing most of the time, but she cares for Blaire in her own way, and would defend him with her life if the need ever arose.
