WITH EVERY BROKEN BONE, I SWEAR I LIVED
Chikorita had trouble looking beyond the present. Young and reckless, she hated the way her rookie trainer handled her--not even respecting her need to look beautiful every single moment of the day. She was scolded in almost every battle since whenever she got hit, she would scream and start grooming until her pelt was flawless again. Useless Pokemon! How can I reach my dream if you won't even battle?
"(Well 'scuse you, Ms. Trainer, I have a dream too!)" She would think often, feeling rather horrible in her Poke Ball. She remembered when she was still living in Elm's lab with the other starters, and by happenstance, the TV was left open. The screen depicted a beautiful Pokemon in a Contest Battle, gracefully dodging attacks and landing her own powerful beam of light. It was absolutely stunning! From then on, she knew in her heart that the stage is her destiny. If only her trainer had the same sentiments! But no, the battling she wanted was dirty and icky and--ugh! She couldn't stand it. She had to leave. There was no happiness for her here.
And so the next time she was sent out, she took one look at her opponent, and then her trainer, and bolted into the bushes. She barely dodged the menacing red light from the Poke Ball, but after that, her trainer's screams faded into the background of the forest. Yes, she was free! Now to find someone else who could bring her closer to her dream...easier said than done, of course, but that thought only crossed her mind when day turned into night, and Chikorita realized she was alone. Admittedly, she had never been truly alone before. She always had the companionship of her fellow starters at the very least, and her trainer did try to make friends too. She sighed; her dream would not come to her so easily.
The next morning she managed to find her way back to the city, but it looked a lot bigger than she had imagined. How was she supposed to find a fitting trainer amidst all these people? If she weren't careful, she could easily be stepped on! Nevertheless, she boldly wandered into the crowds, making sure to stay on the sidewalk as she passed by many shops and restaurants. She stopped in front of a Pokemon-only clothes shop and saw many accessories that she felt would look good on her. Oh, the dream! If only she had human money to spend, she thought wistfully. It was then a tall person suddenly lifted her up from her spot, making her squeak indignantly, "(Hey, what are you doing?! Let me go!)"
"Aww, are you lost, little one? Where's your trainer?" the human responded, wearing some kind of strange uniform and had a smile that Chikorita did not trust, "(I'm not lost! I was just admiring the clothes, that's all!)" Of course, the person did not understand, but seemed happy that no one was approaching them for her. "It's okay, I'll find you a new home. Surely someone would want to trade for a rare Pokemon like you."
Chikorita did not like this at all. It looked like she was just going to be carted away as a shopping item! She continued to scream and flail, but because she no battle experience at all, she couldn't use any of her moves. "Hey, come on, quiet now. Your trainer doesn't seem to be coming back for you." the stranger said while putting his hand over her mouth. She started to cry, knowing full well that she was the one who ran away from her trainer, and that from here she had no idea what was going to happen to her. For all she knew, she might end up with an even stricter, battle-hungry trainer, or worse! It was only then someone else had approached them, and she could feel the person holding her jump.
"Hey, what are you doing with Daisy?"
Chikorita was confused, but then she heard a voice in her head, "(Please play along, we're trying to help you!)" She recognized that it was another Pokemon, but it was only when she saw something black hovering behind the new person did she realize it was coming from there. In a split second, she decided that she'd rather take her chances with someone who looked like a trainer over a sketchy person. "(Oh, uh, yes! That's my trainer, please put me down!)" she cried, flailing her arms towards the direction of the orange-haired man. Clearly, the one holding her was distressed over losing a potential trade, but he had no choice but to let her down. "You should really pay more attention to her. Otherwise, other people might see her as free game."
"I'll keep that in mind, thanks." he replied. With that, the uniform guy left with a small "tch" under his breath. Chikorita sighed in relief. That was close! Now, who in the name of Arceus did she end up with? At least this new human looked decent, even rather fashionable. "Let's go inside this cafe, then we can talk." he said, pointing at a nearby Poke Cafe. The grass Pokemon wondered how in the world this man could understand her, but then remembered that he had a Pokemon who had telepathy. She followed with little hesitation, forgetting for the meantime that her pelt had been dirtied by recent events.
"Are you okay with me calling you Daisy? Or do you have your own nickname?"
She thought about it for a moment, "(No, Daisy sounds like a cute name. I like it.)" The Unown, who she learned its name was Al, didn't have to translate that. Lou, the young man who apparently saved her, understood and showed a smile. The two exchanged information about themselves--Chikorita, who had recently run away from her first trainer, and Lou, who had been traveling for a long time and had also started with a Pokemon like herself. Now that things had calmed down, their conversation was often halted by her grooming and also eating the food Lou bought for her. Al would act as the middleman and translate the more detailed and complex portions of her story.
"Well, I don't have any plans to be a Coordinator, unfortunately," he said by the near end of their conversation, "but you can stay with us until we find someone suitable for you. Admittedly it would be really great for us if you join since Al hates fighting. You do need to know how to battle to win Contests, after all. At least until we find someone else willing to travel with us." Lou had planned to check out the forest for a new addition to the team. It would frankly be dangerous for him to travel around this region with Al alone.
Once again she quickly made a decision, puffing out her chest proudly, "(I'll do it, but you'll have to buy me something.)"
"Oh? And what would that be?"
And that's how Daisy the Chikorita gained a new flower accessory tied around her leaf and a new trainer. For Lou, on the other hand, he had to keep the mumbling of an expensive clip to himself.
