PERSONALITY
Rhafiel is a quiet man. He prefers his personal life to remain just that, personal. He refuses to talk too much about himself, unless you’re already close to him, but he’s not unsociable. He seems outwardly bored with things, but the little conversations are really what keeps him going in life. He's also a great listener. Rhafiel has been gifted with a great memory. There are very few things he forgets, and he never ever forgets a face.
That said, Rhafiel has an inherently difficult time getting close to people. There are so many hoops that people have to jump through to get to know him, and there have been few people in his life who have bulldozed their way in. It takes a lot of time and effort, but it is entirely worth it in the end. Rhafiel does his best to be a consistent and worthwhile friend. The effort people put into him is given back two-fold.
This man has a very prim and proper heir about him. He's not arrogant in the slightest, but he is blunt and very matter of fact, so he does tend to seem rather rude. He's a people person, and can be rather friendly in that blunt and aloof way of his, but he has a hard time with those who act impulsively or idiotically. That isn't to say that he doesn't act impulsively himself or that he isn't rather daring when it comes to his duties, but he finds it annoying when he has to save or help someone because they acted stupidly in the first place.
Rhafiel is a rather cunning and tactical man. He can come up with plans and tactics rather quickly, and then form various other solutions to the same issue in case the first plan doesn't work. He's observant, and is known for being able to figure out what people really want from him or others.
While Rhafiel can seem to be very tactless, he’s not without empathy. He hurts when others hurt, especially those who are very close to him. He’s not against death, and he understands the need for it, but he’s not the type who would will a solution to end in the worst way. He tries his hardest to keep anyone from death, and is very vocal about calling for non-deadly practices. However, hardly ever will you see the man show his pain in an outward way. He keeps things bottled up pretty tightly, rarely even shedding tears. If he does cry, however rare that may be, it’s because everything had suddenly spilled over.
Rhafiel is a loyal man, though there is only so far that his loyalties will stretch. Anything that he views as wrong or evil can make him switch loyalties on a dime. If his loyalties are tested one too many times, you can bet that he will find someone else to put his trust into. He's not very trusting in the first place, but losing his loyalty once gained isn't something that's easily done. It takes great strain on a relationship or on him as a human being for him to lose faith in those that he's learned to trust. Rhafiel will do anything and everything asked for him, as long as he remains loyal. Even to a fault. If you ask him to take someone’s life, more often than not he will do it without fail or hesitation.
Rhafiel is extremely protective people and Pokemon. Everyone's pain is his own, and he can't stand to see another being suffer for too long. He'd do anything to keep them safe and alive, even going as far as using violence or force, even giving his own life if that's what was needed of him.
Another thing about this man is that he has both heterosexual and homosexual tendencies (ultimately he’s a pansexual), having no problems taking either gender into his bed, though he keeps that pretty much to himself. He can be a bit of a flirt once he's opened himself up to someone, but he doesn't really like to play around. If something is real, its real, raw, and passionate and he won't let it go easily. To him, it's all or nothing. You embrace every part of him, or you can have no part of his heart. He's not one for playing games when it comes to matters of the heart, so it's best that you don't play him. If you do, you can expect to meet cold resistance and a man that will keep you at arm’s length just for the sake of protecting himself from the cruelty of others. He loves too deeply to handle whatever cruel tricks are played on his heart, so he tries not to repeat the same mistake twice.
When it comes to battle, Rhafiel is careful and aware of his Pokemons’ needs. He tries his hardest to work the battle in his favor so that is Pokemon aren’t injured badly. If they faint or are injured very badly, he becomes rather excitable and inconsolable. He feels incredibly guilty for getting them hurt and will spoil them rotten until he feels that he’s made up for his misgivings.
Rhafiel prefers to do something artistic in his spare time. If he's not working, more often than not you will find him nestled somewhere comfortable with his journal in hand, enjoying a peaceful day and writing. He's a great writer, though he doesn't exactly put himself out there with his work. Rhafiel is a popular writer who writes under the moniker of "Fell". He does this purely for anonymity, as his goal isn't to be famous, it's to write. He never puts his photos in his books, and he doesn't do book signings. Very few people know who he really is, but those that do are usually sworn to secrecy. Thus far, he has written six novels and two informational books on Pokemon.
This man loves sweets of all kinds, something that he's never been able to break himself of since he was a child. He's allergic to peanuts, so he has to be very careful about the kinds of food and sweets that he eats. Just like with his writing, he loves to cook because it ensures that the food he prepares is safe for him to eat and he won't have an allergic reaction to anything. He enjoys cooking for people. Rhafiel does not like fish of any kind, even shellfish. If it's offered to him, he will eat it and keep his silent disdain for the food to himself.
Rhafiel's favorite season is the spring, because it promotes the growth of new life. It also isn't too hot or too cold of a season, and is perfect when one wants to lounge around and relax in the spring air.
It should be noted that Rhafiel cares very deeply for all Pokemon, not just his own. He loves his own to the ends of the Earth and would do anything to make sure that they stay happy and healthy. He's very gentle with them, and when interacting with Pokemon, he can seem like an entirely different man from the reserved one that you see most of the time.
Rhafiel is fluent in multiple languages: English, German, and French.
BACKGROUND
Rhafiel was born in the Stellara region, but he was born an orphan. His mother passed away directly after his birth and his father, a fisherman, died in a shipwreck long before his mother knew she was with child. Rhafiel was put directly into the orphanage and was raised within its walls. Thankfully, the lady who ran the orphanage was incredibly kind. He grew up with children just like him and he was incredibly close with all of them. He was the oldest of the kids his age, and he found himself to be very protective over the youngest two. They played together, read together, and learned together. No matter what it was, they were always together.
When Rhafiel was ten, both of his friends were adopted. He was left feeling alone and unwanted, though he kept in close contact with his two friends. After some convincing and a little help from the orphanage lady, she allowed him to set out on an adventure with Pokemon. He'd expressed his disdain for possibly being adopted, as he felt he only needed one set of parents. His were both dead, so he wanted to try and go out on his own. The lady gave him one of her own Pokemon, a newly-hatched Purrloin named Nyx, armed him with Pokeballs, supplies, a map, and some money and let him go on his way, under the pretense that he would check in with her from time to time, and go to school whenever he could. She wanted to see him make something of himself, not just run out into the wild with no aim or goals for the rest of his life.
He moved from his small town to Vega city and started attending school, working as an aid at the Pokecenter to make some extra cash. He trained with his Pokemon as much and as often as he could, finding comfort in being with them at all times. He spent quite a few years in the city. In fact, the city has been home for more of his life simply because he fell so deeply in love with it. He would leave to travel the region and then return within a few days, finding those few days to be just enough to satiate his need for adventure. He was 14 when his abilities to see aura started to make themselves known. Initially, it freaked him out when he would close his eyes and see the little aura around Nyx, but then he set his mind to figuring out what was actually happening to him. He spent weeks researching what the ability could be and attempting to find some way to better hone the skill.
Rhafiel graduated high school when he was 16, having worked his tail off to get ahead and move through his studies faster. During the summer after graduation, he worked on the docks in Vega, but had a bad accident toward the middle of the summer. He was hospitalized, and it left him with a major scar diagonally across his back. It was during his recovery that he put most of his energy into playing with his abilities. There was little else to do in a hospital bed but to close ones eyes an focus on the world. Nyx made the experience a little more bearable, as well, as the feline refused to stay in her Pokeball and wouldn't let the nurses do anything but feed her.
He was slightly annoyed that she could con so much food out of the nice nurses and doctors, and he made her work off all the extra weight she had put on once he was out of the hospital.
Once free of the hospital bed, Rhafiel also started college. His favorite past time as a teenager was to read. Books were pretty much his lifeline. He never went anywhere without them. Wanting to pursue a career in writing, Rhafiel was also hyper aware that writers didn't often make a good living wage. Thus, he put forth the time and energy to double major in both English and Psychology, hoping to study both human and Pokemon psychology later in life. He was 18 when he graduated the first time. At 18, he also spent a year interning with Interpol as a psychological profiler as his "clinical study". He felt like a bit of a cheat when he could close his eyes and read the auras of the people who came in and out of the building, but he kept that entirely to himself.
With that out of the way, Rhafiel threw himself back into his studies. Knowing that he had to slow down a little bit and take the rest of his schooling a little bit at a time, Rhafiel decided to go for his Master's degree in Psychology first. The man was so in love with literature and writing that he truly couldn't imagine not taking his schooling further, but he knew that his psychology programs would move him toward his goals much faster. Toward the end of his Master's program, Rhafiel participated in an exchange program to another region. He started attending at the start of the summer for a year-long exchange. There, he met a student a few years younger than himself (he was 22 and the other man was 18). Not wanting to get too attached, and knowing full well that he would anyway, Rhafiel insisted that they only use their middle names with one another. It was easier than trying to make a commitment that may not last, though... he honestly should have known better.
He and Alexandre were close in the year that they spent together. Halfway through the first semester Rhafiel knew that he was done-for. This man was his and like hell he'd let anything happen to them, but the uncertainty was still there. He tried not to let it bother him through and tried to soak up as much time with him as possible. Rhafiel was supposed to be part of the group that stayed for the entirety of the year, but toward the end of the second out of three semesters, one of Rhafiel's old friends from the orphanage contacted him. He'd stayed in contact himself over the years. In fact, Rhafiel and his friends had gone to school with each other in Vega and then to college later. But Alison was sick and Raj couldn't handle it alone. Rhafiel told him he'd be back in a week's time and spent the rest of that semester cranking out his last few essays and packing his things.
He may have been trying to avoid Alexandre as well, knowing full well that this separation was going to be difficult for them both. In a rush on his last day at the institute, he found his way into Alexandre's dorm and stuffed a hastily written note in the man's copy of The Odyssey before making a bee-line to the airport... where he dropped his phone while running to his gate. He cursed himself up and down when he realized it was gone, his heart sinking at the thought of not being able to see Alexandre again.
His efforts were fruitless, however. Alison had passed away from sudden heart failure just minutes before Rhafiel stepped foot in her hospital room. He was brokenhearted and nearly inconsolable. It took a few weeks, but after her funeral he threw himself back into the last semester of his master's program. This time, he interned in a clinical therapy office. It took a lot of hard work, but Rhafiel graduated with his masters in Psychology when he was 22.
Around this time, he decided it was time to take a break from schooling. Admittedly, he just wanted to work, write, and try and live a little. He honestly just wanted to feel as happy as he had while on the exchange program. He now works in the same clinical therapy office he worked at for his Master's internship. However, needing to do something a little different with his life, Rhafiel inquired about the local opening for the dark type gym leader position in Vega City. He had a penchant for dark type Pokemon and wanted the challenge. Thankfully, he was able to take the position and quit his job at the clinic, leaving the rest of his days open for gym work or anything else he wants to do from now on. Mostly, he wants to write a book or two.
He still misses Alexandre, though. He feels like he gave up far too quickly and it haunts him.

PERSONALITY — Nyx is Rhafiel's best friend. As a result, she tries to annoy him any way that she can a lot of the time. Or she'll complain. Sometimes she'll be weird and a little crazy... but she's loyal. She is admittedly one of the most loyal Pokemon that Rhafiel will likely ever have the pleasure of working with. She's a sweetheart in disguise and will show her soft side mostly to him and the few others who are close to him. On a normal day, she's mischievous, trouble-making, stubborn, and even a little sarcastic. But she takes orders well, and soothes Rhafiel when he truly needs her.
Oh, and she's completely obsessed with food and maybe a tiny bit greedy. She's also been known to flirt a lot with the handsome male Pokemon she comes into contact with.
