Ivan has always been very anti-social and socially awkward. While he isn't too quiet, Ivan just thinks that it's a waste of time to start conversations with people. Especially when he could be using that time to train his pokemon or study battling strategies. However, if someone starts a conversation with him, then he'll likely try and talk to them. Most of the time Ivan's answers are short or one word, which makes conversations with him extremely boring. This is mainly because he doesn't want to come off as insensitive and seem like he only cares about himself. So, Ivan is constantly looking for validation from other people. If someone manages to befriend Ivan, they'll learn he can be very loyal and kind-hearted.

When it comes to battling, Ivan is a strategist and doesn't like using brute force in battles. But most of the time he overthinks things in battle and often ends up losing because of it. If he's losing a battle he'll often become very pessimistic and come very close to giving up. He also tends to hold grudges against people that have defeated him in a battle and won't let it go until he comes close to or fairly defeats them. Ivan spends most of his free time training with his pokemon or studying things like pokemon type effectiveness or pokemon abilities to help him in battle.


Ivan grew up with an older brother who often overshadowed him. While his parents were both members of Team Crux. Because he got little to no attention from his parents, Ivan only focused on studying and not on making friends which led to him being anti-social and closed off from the people around him. Excelling in school, his brother still overshadowed him, becoming a very strong trainer. As time went on, his older brother was admitted into Team Crux through his father. 

His parents were both pokemon breeders and often supplied pokemon for Team Crux's research on pokemon morphs. Ivan never really understood much about Team Crux's motives and why they needed so many different pokemon. His parents had mentioned something about Ivan inheriting their business even though he had been in his older brothers shadow for his entire life. When it was time for Ivan to get his starter pokemon, his parents had insisted that they would be the ones to give it to him. On the day, Ivan was greeted by a small Deino that wasn't that bright. Because he didn't want to disappoint his parents, Ivan accepted the Deino.

As they set out on their journey together, Ivan found it hard to train Grim. He couldn't understand some commands that Ivan would call out and he would often trip over himself trying to run. Soon enough, Ivan felt like giving up and abandoning the helpless Deino. A few years later, they started to get along more and Grim slowly started to grow on Ivan. Grim could understand basic commands from Ivan but still made mistakes when he was trying his best. Now, the two traverse the Starella region in search of more information about Team Crux and to one day prove that he's better than his brother.

PERSONALITY — Grim is almost nothing like his trainer, instead, he's quite relaxed, laid back and adventurous. He's very friendly towards other pokemon but gets frustrated when he's not getting enough attention from Ivan. He enjoys riding on top of Ivan's head when he gets the chance but normally just walks next to him. In battle since Grim is blind, he can often become quite hesitant and might not attack. He also can become quite clueless and forget that he's fighting which makes him unreliable in a battle. Grim tries to follow Ivan's commands but most of the time, even when he tries his best, he just can't properly execute them.
