PERSONALITY
Koa is an easy person to befriend, or at least he tries to be. A lonely childhood led to some mistakes he'd rather not speak of, so he is trying to atone with his journey across the Stellara Region. He is an altruist at heart and willing to do whatever he can to help those in trouble. Pokemon and humans are both equally important to him and puts forth as much effort for either. Though relatively new to the Pokemon training scene, he tries to maintain a confident outlook despite some deep-rooted insecurity over his beginner nature. Regardless, he tries to remain open-minded, friendly, and helpful at every opportunity.
His insecurities involve his past, specifically a few of his teenage years as a member of Team Skull. While he didn't really get himself involved with any of the shady business, knowing the extent of what they did during a certain period in Alola left an impact on him and left him ashamed. He joined out of loneliness and a feeling of being lost, not to harm people or Pokemon. Part of him believes he doesn't even deserve to be a trainer as a result and those feelings occasionally show themselves, especially when stressed. Despite these hangups, Koa does his best to better himself and be better to both people and Pokemon.
BACKGROUND
Born and raised on Akala Island in Alola, Koa Leilani was a rather lonely and quiet child compared to who he is now. It was mostly just him and his mother, as his father worked as an agent for the Aether Foundation in other regions. His father would often be sent abroad to aid in the conservation efforts there, so it was rare for him to be home for more than a month at a time. Koa and his mother got along well, but he wasn't really sociable with others. Elementary school came and went for him, though the start of his teenage years led to negative influences in his life.
Not having friends began to wear on Koa despite his younger self's preference for isolation. He didn't even really know much about Pokemon other than the occasional visits to Paniola Town, and that alienated him even more from others of Alola. During school, he was met by a scout for Team Skull, who offered him a group of friends who would get him up to speed on what it means to have those you could rely on. In his naivety, he joined up and even got a tattoo on his right hand to signify his affiliation. At first, it was fine. Odd as they were, the Team seemed pretty outgoing and friendly, though that was because he didn't know what some of the team was doing behind the scenes. He was blissfully unaware up until he was about sixteen years old and heard about some of the horrible things the team was responsible for. Harassing trainers on their Island challenges, stealing Pokemon, etc. Never before had he felt so disgusted and betrayed. These were just people he spent time with after school, why did they do things like this? He would eventually stop associating with them altogether.
He wanted to make up for what Team Skull had done. He spent the rest of his high school years volunteering at the local Pokemon Center to treat injured and sick Pokemon. It was there he met an injured young Popplio. The poor thing was found washed ashore after some kind of accident and the Primarina that was assumed to be its mother was no longer alive. Feeling sorrow for the poor Pokemon, Koa came back every day to help treat her injuries and began to develop a bond with her. With nowhere for the Pokemon to go, the staff at the Pokemon center asked Koa if he would like to keep her. Surprised, Koa wondered why they would let him since they knew of his previous affiliation with Team Skull. They told him that despite that, he was always a good kid that deserved better. Perhaps being a trainer would awaken something within him.
Not long after adopting the Popplio and naming her Azura, Koa heard about the Stellara Region. He was a little old for the Island Challenge now, so he figured maybe a journey abroad was exactly what he needed. When his father came back from one of his assignments, he informed his parents of his goals and they approved of them completely. With a tearful hug and goodbye, he boarded a ship for Stellara, ready to make something of himself.

She's also rather energetic and playful, blowing bubbles and clapping her flippers to get attention. Like most of her species, she adores the sound of music and never misses the chance to sing and dance along with a new tune. Thanks to her, Koa has a newfound appreciation for music as an art form.
