PERSONALITY
Laid back, ambitious, confident, independent and just tad bit self-centered. Roland is an individualist first and foremost, a man that values individuality and liberty above all else. He's hardly afraid to speak his mind, no matter how unpopular his opinion might prove in the presence of others. Having grown up very much neglected by those around him, he's quick to disregard the opinions and feelings of those around him should their opinions conflict too much with his own. Having embraced his own individuality along with his Psychic powers, he outright pities those who settle for being "normal", thinking less of them for settling for such a menial existence. In friends and comrades he seeks individuals much like himself, those who dare to just be and care little for what others think of them. When it comes to the subject of a significant other, he has what one might call no experience with the opposite sex what so ever. He'd be at a complete loss of how to even approach a woman in that regard. Admittedly though, it would take quite the woman to distract him from himself.
He is quite outspoken, oftentimes bordering on being outright rude as he throws himself into the conversations of others. He's hardly one for subtlety and is surprisingly honest about his motives when it comes down to it, that being whatever he's feeling like at the time. He has a sarcastic sense of humour, often making light of serious situations for better or worse depending on who you are. He's also prone to spacing off now and then when in a relaxed enough environment, claiming that it's a habit brought forth by him often letting his mind wander off as a means of honing his Psychic powers. Speaking off his powers, he often applies them as a means of approaching problems, much in part due to how he feels that most don't people don't get to, meaning that he should since he can. Even when not using his powers, he actively tries to approach different situations in the most unconventional ways he can think of, inherently aware that an unconventional approach to just about anything will leave the opposing party speechless and oftentimes unable to even muster a response.
As a trainer he is partial to Psychic types due to him feeling something akin to kinship with them, much due to his powers no doubt. That and that Psychic types are supposedly easier to talk to, telepathically speaking. That's not to say he's above training pokemon of another type, and odds are he'll just catch something cool looking on a whim anyhow. Naturally, he'd be very much excited to meet a fellow human Psychic should the opportunity present itself.
As big a deal Roland makes of being an individual and insisting that he cares little for the opinions of others, part of him really is just desperate to be accepted for who he is, and more importantly, who he could be given the opportunity. It would take a lot for him to admit this to someone else, much more so to himself.
BACKGROUND
The circumstances of Roland's birth is something unknown to him to this day. What is certain is that he was eventually put up for adoption and subsequently adopted by a fairly prestigious family. His newfound adoptive parents had resorted to adoption after their numerous attempts at making a child of their own, though they loved him no less for it, at least for the first few days. It was readily appearent to his adoptive father after an innocent display of baby Roland's powers that these very same powers were to blame for someone putting him up for adoption to begin with. His mother didn't care much, her being able to see Roland for the happy baby that he was, supernatural powers or not. She even insisted on letting her dear Munna look after him as he slept, preventing any nasty incidents of the psychic nature while he slept. In time, even his father would learn to look past his child's strange powers. Or at least until he didn't have to settle for him anymore.
5 years later, the unthinkable happened. The couple finally had a child of their own, though at the expense of his mother's life. With the one parent that had sincerely loved him out of the picture and a normal child for his father to foster, Roland was largely neglected by his only parent and the people around him. He was told to change his last name so that nobody would link him to the rest of the family,(Roland had at the very least managed to take his mother's maiden name in this case) He was told to sleep in the servants' quarters, and he was under no circumstances allowed to tell his little sister about his actual relation to their family. And so it was that his adoptive little sister was raised to believe that Roland was yet another servant of theirs (Albeit one that seemingly never worked).
While neglected in just about every sense of the word, he was granted a sort of freedom in the sense that nobody really expected anything out of him. He was free to do as he wished in the family mansion, provided he didn't disturb anyone. Though with neglect came also solitude, something slightly alleviated by the remaining presence of his mother's Munna that would still watch over him at night. With time, Roland's Psychic abilities eventually matured to the stage where he could freely use telepathy to communicate with those around him, pokemon included. With this new power of his, he managed to find friends in the form of pokemon that lived in the wilderness surrounding the mansion. While his father and staff didn't think too much of it, his little sister took an interest in the older boy that played with pokemon in their backyard every day. While he made sure never to tell her about their relation as instructed, they had a healthy enough relationship all the same.
In spite of all the little things he could appreciate in spite of his solitude, he obviously couldn't help but wanting more. His father had not only forbidden Roland to go on the customary coming of age journey for most youths, he had also neglected to gift Roland a pokemon of his own. At the age of 21 he finally decided that it was time he spread his wings and see what he could accomplish on his own merit in this world. He boldly barged into his father's office only to tell him that he was leaving, only to turn away the very next moment, running. Many people gave chase only to find a Snorlax having settled in front of the main gate, Roland Gates looking rather pleased with himself on the other side of said gate as he slid into a cab and had it drive him away from the mansion. He'd considered taking his mother's Munna or any of the pokemon he'd befriended around the house with him, but he felt that it was very important for this next step to be a new beginning for himself, to see what he himself could manage as an individual. That and he'd instructed the Munna to watch over his sister, she had always pouted over her mother's Munna only spending time with him anyway.
The next day, he'd arrived in Stellara on a whim, having heard of their especially difficult pokemon league. The very same day he happened upon an Elgyem sitting by itself on edge of a sidewalk, the rain pouring down on it. Roland couldn't help but sympathize with the lonely pokemon at the mere sight of it, resorting to his telepathic abilities to keep the little guy at ease as he talked to it. He'd offered the pokemon shelter from the rain, and the Elgyem had little reason to refuse the kind offer. After hearing the now dry fellow out, he named it Roswell and resolved to take it as his partner. Now with a pokemon on his side, he really could go anywhere. As for whether that's a good thing or not... I have no idea.

-Cosmic Power (Egg Move)

PERSONALITY — A very much timid and insecure little fellow. This Elgyem is supposedly an amnesiac who's last memory is being dropped off on a plain by a strange light hovering above him, eventually having wandered into the city where Roland found him just days later. Having no idea who, what, where he is or even where he came from to begin with, he feels very much lost in every sense of the word. As a result he is very much dependent on Roland as the one who offered him his friendship "from one loner to another", making Roswell view Roland as something akin to a guardian figure. Roswell adores his trainer so much that he can often be found clinging to Roland with his stubby little arms, more often than not found hugging Roland's leg when able. He is still fairly uncomfortable around strangers, often clinging to Roland even then, though a good petting and some kind words are usually enough to ease his nerves somewhat.
While not very confident in his own abilities, Roswell trusts Roland enough to believe him when he says that he can be strong. And even when he's not so sure, he still can't bring himself to let his trainer down. Roswell might be a work in progress, but he tries so hard, and that's about all you can ask of a partner.
While Roswell has indeed confided in Roland regarding his amnesia, Roland thought it unfair to promise Roswell that he'd help him figure it out, especially with so little to go on, and Roswell having no recollection of where this supposed field he was dropped in was located. Roland had simply given the Elgyem a name, told him that he'd just have to settle for a new life as his partner, and promised that in doing so, it would certainly make up just fine for whatever life he'd lived before.
And Roswell believed him.
