To describe Reyn, most people use the adjective "quiet". He's a youth with very little presence, usually staying on the background instead of actively participating. Many suggested that he is merely shy. The boy himself rather than shy, it's seem that he thinks socializing, unless bringing some form of benefit to be a bit of a pain in the ass. When asked why, the boy would answer "it's because I'm dull, and I rarely find anyone interesting."

Having spent time more with Pokemon than human, he prefer to chat with Pokemon more than with human. When he did this, there are times where it's like he's deaf to what human said. In turn, it annoys many human who think he's purposely ignoring them. They're not really right, but they're not wrong either. He just find the personalities of various Pokemon more engaging than human. At times Pokemon had to translate what their human said to him in this  timeframe, as he only hear their voice like buzzing sounds.

Unlike most, Reyn is the "passive" guy. He doesn't share the trainer's belief that if your eyes met then you have to battle. For him, as long as reasonable, he doesn't mind to battle, but if it came to unreasonableness, such as a trainer suddenly insisting battle upon battle on him, then most likely he'll punch them on the face instead. He also cares more about his Pokemon's feeling more than he lets on. He views battling without agreement from his own Pokemon as something brutal, just like cruel betting game at the expense of the Pokemon (hey, you got money when you win at times!).

This also reflected when he catches his Pokemon. He would talk with them before attempting to capture them. He only captures those that really want to battle. He believed that like this, they won't somehow get pushed to battle when they don't want to battle. Of course he also captures Pokemon for another uses, but he prefer if they come with him on his journey willingly than "because it's fun to collect them all!". He does like their biology, it's fun to learn more about them, but he's not going to capture them just for the sake of research.

Despite his passive stance, when his Pokemon agreed to battle, then he'll show a competitive attitude befitting of an ace trainer. Reyn's strategy usually is more to tricky play instead of direct confrontation.


Reyn is born to a pokemon researcher, not really a Pokemon professor, just a researcher, who's trying to unearth reason of why there exist regional differences, which includes migration route of Pokemon from prehistoric era. That researcher is his mother. Apparently she's used to be a trainer before deciding to stay in Alola. His father is an Alolan locale and a Trainer. Reyn never heard much about his father, nor he's present in his life as far as he remembered. His mother, as far as he know, already divorced from that man and married with her job.

When he asked why his father is not with them, his mother answered it's because his father loves freedom. While she also loves freedom, she loves freedom of another brand. His father loves freedom where he can go away from the small island region, while his mother seem to love freedom from fear, something that she did not get out there.

Life without father made Reyn's mother take the role of both mother and father. She worked hard for the two of them, often bringing Reyn moving from islands to islands, going from places to places. Life wasn't all that dull. Reyn learned a lot from all those activities, especially camping, a bit of survival technique, cooking and foraging.

Life spent mostly out of civilization made him not used talking with human. He's more used talking with Pokemon. From their body language and their calls, he could determine what they're talking of. This become a factor that delayed him getting a Pokemon. At 10 he was  supposed to get his starter Pokemon, but he refused to pick any of the three Pokemon offered by Professor Kukui as at that time none of them suited him.

His meeting with Rex was at 13, when a family friend from Kalos gave him a fossil. Although he had no idea what sort of Pokemon will come out, being that he's not a fossil specialist, he gave it to Reyn. The resulting Pokemon is a Tyrunt that Reyn aptly named Rex. He admitted while Rex is not his ideal starting Pokemon due to being quite destructive and having short patience, it was his choice to revive him. Hence, he's Rex's "father". Remembering about his own father, he refused to abandon the Tyrunt no matter how badly behaving he is. After two years of bonding, Rex's temper tantrum is less prominent and he's less destructive. However, there are scars on Reyn's body that shows how badly behaved the young Pokemon was.

When he reached 15, Reyn's mother suggests him to broaden his horizon. Despite not knowing why exactly, he decided to follow her suggestion.

Rex in fact cannot stay still without anything on his jaw. He often would chomp on various thing, usually branches of a tree, or jawbreaker candy. His favorite nibbling toy however is Reyn's hand.

...That won't go well, won't it?

Despite being a Pokemon well known for its temper tantrum, Rex nowadays rarely go on a temper tantrum, only pouting while sitting on his bum and refused to move when he's angry, but apparently in the past he was really a handful one, as proven by Reyn's scars.

He treated battle like a game, a game where he can train his reaction time, his technique, and get stronger. He of course want to win in all his game, so he will listen to what his big bro said, or at least, so he said.


Rex dislikes being contained in Pokeball, so he often just walk. It also goo for now and then to take it easy, right? At least so he thinks. Well, all in all, Rex is just a child that happened to like to nom a lot... That's not a problem is it?
