Training.
"Ain't that the truth." He said at Koontz's words, sighing. The man was correct; too many sought the easiest path available to them. Doug himself was not excluded. He had been just like that at the start of his journey.
It truly was better to just take a challenge head on.
"That's the way to go." He said, nodding his approval. "I gotta admit, I actually wasn't too far off from the kind of lazy ass that sought the easiest path before." He grinned despite himself.
He had always limited himself to one type; needless to say, he had been keenly aware of the weakness a full bug type team would likely have, and had sought to damper said weaknesses.
To that end, he had even taken note of which types the gyms of Stellara had and mapped himself out a path. So long as he followed his plan there was no way he could fail, right?
His battle with Arthur had suggested otherwise. Despite possessing the advantage, he had come frighteningly close to defeat during the battle. It had been something of an eye opening experience, though at the time, the boy had stubbornly refused from altering his path. After all, he had still won, hadn't he?
"I wonder if others will realize how foolish it is as quickly as I did." Perhaps? Perhaps not.
It wasn't until he became a gym leader and got a good look at the new set of pokemon at his command that he realized that his perfect, cobbled path to victory was at best a narrow, unstable mountain trail.
It was arguable if the teams on other gyms were as well prepared to deal with cocky challengers as his; after all, his was made of his mother's students; but if they were, then his mapped path was completely worthless.
"It's better to just choose the path that will be the most fun to you, I think." Whatever that definition of fun may be.
These days, he didn't bother with thinking too much about where he would lay his next challenge. He had a very loose idea of which gyms he wanted to challenge first, and it had more to do with either testing a new tactic or to entertain himself.
It was hard to find time to travel far enough to challenge a gym, so he didn't give himself the benefit of thinking about it too much. It wasted too much time.
"So... got a challenge for yourself in mind? Don't have to share specifcis if you don't wanna, course." He could see how it would be embarrassing for some to admit that their goal was to be the champion, or a master coordinator, specially those just barely beginning their journey.
Some saw it as arrogant and conceited behavior to openly declare their lofty goals. Doug just saw it as determination, but he couldn't blame anyone if they didn't want to be judged.
